Hi All

This is going to be a bit of an essay, apologies in advance for that!

Now my bike is on the road I want to turn my attention to building an engine more befitting of its looks. Over the last couple of years I've been building up a stock of parts with no real plan, just that they were cheap enough!

I've read as much as I can about what works and what doesn't and have not come up with a definitive answer as to what I should build from the parts I've got. (Everyone has their own opinion!)

I'm not after maximum power, rather I want a strong engine that's still usable on the road.

I'm no expert and I've never built a Ducati motor before: all machining, lightening, balancing would have to be done by a shop.

Here's what I have and what I think I know...

916SP (66mm stroke, factory lightened)
900SS Carby (68mm stroke)
ST2 (68mm stroke)

I understand that the choice of crank will dictate which computer I use, depending the number of splines on the end of the crank, is this correct?

The 916SP crank still has the rods and pistons installed. If I decide against those rods and pistons (which I think is likely) then the crank assembly will need re-balancing, so I might as well go with a 68mm crank and get it lightened at the same time, right?

Is there any real benefit to using the titanium rods?

96mm, 21mm pins (Omega)

I want to use 96mm pistons to give me 955cc (with a 66mm crank) or 984 (with a 68mm crank).

If I go with the titanium rods should I buy a pair of 96mm pistons with 20mm pins (at about £220) or could I have the rods machined to 21mm?

I understand that to get the full benefit out of twin injectors (ie. bringing in the second pair of injectors at high revs only) I have to use the P8. I also understand that for dialing in the cams the P16 is preferable. Am I right? Are there other benefits to each?

900SS crank, lightened
Titanium rods
96mm pistons with 20mm pins (I'll have to buy these, JE are good, right?)
916SP barrels bored to 96mm
916SP heads, machined for bigger valves
30/36 valves
A/G cams (G exhaust too harsh for the road?)
Twin-injector throttle-bodies
P8 ECU
