Can someone please confirm that on a vin number the S3 bit on a 851 1992
frame means it's for race use only ?
I did a search but nothing with the S3
ZDM851S3.................

Steve, I doubt that the S3 on the frame means it was a race frame...easiest way to check is if it has the subframe mounts missing on the lower frame rails near the headstock and the tags will be missing for the regulator.

Another way to identify race frames is by putting up a photograph of the two bobbins that attatch the front subframe to the headstock, image should be taken head on looking towards the rear of the frame.

Other images that will help in identifying Corse frames are images of the inner area of the frame where the engine mounts go through. There are other bits that also differ between road and race frames.

There are countless 851S3 bikes out there, you only have to look on the european sites where they are listed and you will find plenty of standard machines with that designation.

No Peter (It is Peter ?) Good news! i read that the 3 after the S means the frame is for racing only!
I have been offered a 1992 851 frame with no papers but i may be able to
get it registered in the uk.

Irrespective of whether it is a race frame or not it will allow you to get your bike together...unless you are paying a premium for it being an alleged race frame!

The VIN on my '89 851 is ZDM851S3........ and it definitely aint a race bike.

Both of my 851's have S3 in the number and both are Strada's, one has the early frame the other the later.

My 1991 is ZDM851S3............. and it is a strada. No race there. Very solw original actualy😄

Perhaps they are all from the legendary SP3S, that may have been mothballed at the last minute...what were Ducati to do but use the frames in the production of standard machines, waste not want not! 😁

Wow since the identity of the bike in the UK is taken from the frame number, I've got two very rare SP3S's can I join the exclusive SP owners group?

Any members from the UK had any dealings with the DVLA to register a
euro spec frame ?
Read stuff on the dvla site but non of it adds up tbh 😏

Hi Peter, I'm waiting for a reply from a member on here who lives in france.
If it's without papers i guess i'm heading for trouble with the dvla ?
