No to the Air box

So got pod filters because I didn't want to try and fab an air box, and happy with the plan but it also allows for the removal of the crankcase catch tank, if you go and put a vent on the crank case. Now some don't like the thought of venting to the open. Some say if can mist over the rear, but what was the reasoning for the larger tank on the race bikes. Not overly sure if I want to do away with some sort of safety/ catch tank, but I spotted this on the net, what you think, it looks like its just a collector and there's no return.

The large box on the race bikes is to trick the engine into thinking it has a huge crankcase volume which when running is under a partial vacuum. (supposedly more power). The stock reed valve in the crankcase allows the volume of air in the crankcase to escape but the reed valve prevents it from re-entering,,,ala, partial vacuum. When a large breather box is used the reed valve is removed from the crankcase and moved to the outboard side of the larger breather box. Usually a larger spigot without the reed valve and larger hose is used to connect to the engine to the breather box. Some just vent to the outside, some suck it back in the engine. I just vent to the outside with a small filter on the reed valve in the large breather box. I am about to post pics of the new one I made a while back in the Projects Section.

Five Spoke Wheels

So fitting these, had them of an ST4s stripped & powder coated matt black, front sorted with 25mm bearings, the rear is 25mm on new made axle. I have mounted with 888 cush/SS parted the cone end of the spacer off so it still sits between the wheel bearing and the cush bearing. With this mounted it looks like I need an 8mm spacer on the outher side between the caliper mount and swingarm.

Is there a method of checking I have the wheel central to the front wheel, Im not taliking about the drive just want to check that the center of the wheels are inline?

Hmm...
i putted ST4S wheels on my strada a while ago. Its not as easy to just put a spacer on the calipper.
The st4s wheel is some 5-6 mm wider (hub) than the 888 or ssie (wich is bolt on).
The st4s swing is ofset and the total with of the hub, including brackets, spacers, etc. is the same as 888 (or ssie) but the ST4s (or any st or monster without wishbone on the swing I think) have the whole package moved to the left (5 or 6mm, don't remeber, same lenght as the newer out going shaft is longer).
I think i just had 5 (or 6) mm shaved of the carrier.

I know I'll have to move the sprocket in a bit, I'll have to do that at the front end a little as well. What I am wondering is lining the wheel up first inline with central on the axle.

ST4s & 888 Wheel differences.

This is interesting to read. I've swapped out ST wheels before and they bolted right on to my '94 888LTD (and my '95 900SP for that matter) with no problems, perfect alignment.

Maybe it's just the later ST's or the ST4s. I have installed '04 ST3 wheels and '01 M750 also and again, they bolted right up. It's been a convenience for me with the bikes in the garage all sahring wheels.

Just curious. I wonder if the ST4s was different somehow?

Fitting tyres

About to take the wheels for new tyres valves & balance would you leave the sprocket carrier on as well, I am presuming you would?

Nope. I've never kept the sprocket carrier on as part of the wheel balancing.

Don't recommend it either.

Exhaust opinion please

Exhaust is in a tact up position but looks almost right, the fabricator (who is brilliant) is going to move the rear cylinder pipe further away from the shock, and try to get a tighter fit under swingarm. I don't have any bodywork, so can anyone see any potential issues with the front cylinder exhaust as it looks?

Ah, the fairing sits about 15-20mm away from the bottom lh corner of the sump and looking at my1990 I'd say pretty basically, its going to protrude through the fairing by about 30mm.
Even if you could squeeze it in there, the heat is going to be a big issue on the fairing.

Having already been down this route with both my specials . If you look at the 2 attached photos , with and without bodywork (1198 engine with 54mm pipe) I think you will be O.K. The fairing is cut out underneath already for the standard exhaust. I would recommend some metal tape on the inside of the fairing to take away some of the heat , you could also wrap the exhaust and secure with wire or those S.S. tie wraps. I would also recommend a heat shield over the back exhaust as it exits the cylinder , firstly for the header tank and secondly in case when you tip the tank the quick release fittings leak (As mine did). I now secure them with tie wraps.

Looks very well made... have him consider making a small series ?

Ok, fairings fit no problem, just link scavenger pipes and rear cylinder bend under swingarm to tighten up, changed rear cylinder pipe to give more room round shock. PS I have no idea why the pad rotates some pictures, sorry.
