Previously unloved SP3

Jafa or any of you other antipodean brothers, when I was in Aus. over 20 years ago, the import duty on vehicles was 95% and 40% on parts...what is it currently, is it all worked out differently now?

I have a feeling that most people think that Jafa paid the UK equivalent price for it but I know many would be shocked at the costs involved in importation to Australia, I don't think New Zealand is any better!

I think it is worked out differently now, because all the shipping / documents/ customs / quaritine etc "only" cost my 25% on top of what I paid for the bike. But there will be more cost when I go to register it as I will have to pay stamp duty ( a Grubberment tax ). There's no getting around it, it's all about every man and his dog taking a slice of the pie, which makes the pie you provide have to be bigger!!!!

Is it me, or is there an almost gory quality to this strip down. I feel like I'm rubber necking at a car crash.

What on earth can come next, forks full of vegetable oil?

You have won the admiration of the members here by moving on from the initial disappointment and getting down to the rebuild.

I'm lucky I went with my gut feeling and stripped the bike down, otherwise there could quite well have been crash for you to look at!!! 😯

There won't be vegetable oil in the forks, nor any other oil because the seals are borked and the oil is all over the shipping crate and my garage floor. But it wouldn't surprise me if it was in there 😁

I have been following both threads of this saga and, while I am awed at your positive determination to finally get the bike to a better condition than it should have been when landed, I can only keep thinking one thought: how the hell did you get past the 1989 cut-off for the vehicle importation approval???? Importing as a race bike, or as an exhibit, would preclude registration so how, how did you do it?????

WA seems to have a few ways around the rules that are not available in other states.
I went to a car rally a few years back and took my 1998 LHD car that was imported as a "race car". I got an event permit that allowed me to drive it on the road during the period of that event.
I think you might also be able to get "club registration" there (as you can in other states) once it is 20 years old. There is a club registered
1989 Ferrari F40 in Melbourne for example. It couldn't be registered under any other provision as it is LHD and doesn't meet numerous ADR requirements.

Fair point Brad. My point was about what is advertised, and how it is advertised, versus what is actually delivered. I was lucky enough to see my SP3 before I bought it, so there were no surprises. Our mutual friend was expecting his bike to be in better condition than it is, and was very disappointed when he saw it get unloaded from the truck, based on provided information.
(Our friend should save his money. For a start it's a 4, not a 3, and it doesn't have blue hoses, so it will never win 😁 )

i kind of get the impression he hasn't considered judge backlash to a restored bike in a road bike show. might not be as simple as all that.

Progress update. I got back from 5 weeks away at work, and continued to strip the bike down. I cleaned out all of the resin from the swing arm.

I took it to a guy that builds drag bike frames and drag car chassis' professionally. He said he can fix it so I'll get the anodising stripped off it next time I'm in town and leave it with him to fix it. Then I will clean it all up and smooth off / repair all the other little scrapes and nicks on it and get it reanodised. I found the correct rivnut inserts too with the very low profile head.

The anodising guy said he can redo the fork tubes too. He will strip the anodising off them, give them back to me so I can get someone to polish them up to get rid of all the scrapes and gouges etc, then take them back for reanodising. The only hard thing will be getting the correct colour gold.

I might pull the mufflers to bits and get the sleeves repaired on those and get them reanodised too if the forks and swing arm com up alright. I managed to get a set of 4 brand new Termignoni straps for the mufflers. They are the correct ones and line up with the holes in the sleeves, unlike the disgraceful mess which is on there now. I've also picked up the correct 4.8mm x 12mm blind stainless steel rivets.
