When Raider Motorsport import the bikes to Australia, they are all "1988" models ( or older if they genuinely are ) according to the import paperwork I was supplied with both of my bikes, so I'm wondering when the authorities are going to start wondering how come Ducati made so many different models in 1988?? That's why when you look at their website, very very few bikes have a year there, they are simply "Ducati 900 SS" instead of "(Whichever year it is) Ducati 900 SS". It's a scam straight out as far as I'm concerned, but I don't care because my bikes won't be staying in Australia.

Apparently they are trying to get something organised so they can import 916/996/998 bikes properly instead of doing the dodgy like they have been.

Dodgy is a bit of an understatement, hard to imagine it being feasible even. Must be no inspections in the system?
There a couple of RAWS shops in Melbourne who do all the 916 series bikes; but to this point nobody in Australia does the 888`s Doesn't mean it can't be done though!

I can't help but wonder if this situation has arisen because of a lack of documentation brought forward by mr Salterelli or because of the RM auction house rules, regarding what they accept as a valid means of confirmation.

I suspect it's a lot of both. Despite the disclaimers; RM leaves themselves open to legal recourse if they sell a lot on a dodgy description. Salterelli can only be described as colourful if you know what I mean.

I will take photos of the 888 Corsa and post in due course.

In fairness to Mr Saltarelli and the bike itself, it IS listed as a 1992 888 SBK Corsa Ex Falappa so RM must be satisfied with it's provenance, even if they have not committed this frame and engine combination to a particular race.

I am a registered bidder and have the catalogue pictured. I enquired about available documentation to support provenance and race history. The reply was that " it's a 1992 team bike ridden by Falappa and signed by him on the screen; but we are unable to determine it's race history at this time".
A signed screen doesn't make it a team bike and I will be looking for ID tags and identification markings. I take it that there is little, if any documentation; but I will post what there is.
Many bikes in the collection seem to be parts bin specials and I am hoping this one is different; but not holding my breath.

Well the auction was today. All the Saltarelli bikes had issues, some large and some total misrepresentations.

As expected the "Falappa" bike had none of the ID stampings on major components, no ID tag as pictured in period pictures earlier in the thread and no documentation whatsoever. It looked impressive though and someone paid €50k plus 17% for it.

The 998R that supposedly had 154km's on it was a totally knackered old track bike. It showed obvious evidence of having been crashed with very dodgy repairs and lots of remaining tell tale signs. We lifted the tail to find the entire ECU was missing! It was very rough indeed. The bike pictured in the catalogue was a promotional picture from the bikes release, not the bike in question. Someone paid an amazing €14k plus 17% for it.

The only decent bikes were the factory Desmosedicis, and they were EPIC. It was hilarious when they went across the blocks as the last 2 lots. The crowd had gone and the bikes were quickly bid up to the reserves with bids "from the back of the room". They were knocked down on the reserves to real buyers on single bids.............hmmm. Both had estimates of €300-350k and went for the confirmed reserves of €215k.

Well that was worth flying from the other side of the world for 🙁

Did you happen to look at the fork stampings to see if the bike had GF 921 forks on it Giancarlo Falappa 1992, Bike#1 ? They would be the matching forks to these from bike #2.

That's the highest price ever paid for an 888 Corsa, equal to $75k USD. I tried to sell my verified Fogarty factory works 888 for $48k a few years ago, before the economy collapsed and had no bites. I guess that there are still some people around with too much money. A fool and his money are soon parted.

I just got back from the auction too. I thought the Falappa bike was a steal. I bid to £35k but got pipped.
All in most of the stuff was rubbish the old 750 ss race bikes were really cheap but they weren't real round cases. The 860 's were laughably cheap nowhere near their estimates.

Interestingly, the road based bikes did well a nice 750GT went for 3 x it's estimate at 40k euros plus 20% and the 116 km 998R that was clearly a track day bike went for 3x too.

I ended up buying nothing but happy that the road based stuff is becoming more sort after

I think its a total fake and somebody got reamed. Ian Falloon was there, we
had a long chat about it.
The big boys toys were today. Lots of money with people who had no idea about bikes.

The race 750ss bikes were bitsa things and easy to research. None made big money.

There is a story with 750 GT and price was result of ano ego driven #### swinging contest between 2 bidders.
I was sitting next to one bidder, saw it all. The buyer bought tons of lots including the Rossi Desmo.
Not in any way representative of real world pricing.

Can't imagine that race bike (a collection of very nice parts) making more than £20K at auction in the UK without history.

No doubt it will be on the market in a few more years for a lot more money - Genuine 'GF' Works WSB - £XX?

In the case of a few lots Saltarelli got over the odds; but generally he got hosed, which is what he deserved.
Cars are making massive money today. Clearly lots of money in the room yesterday.

Did the bikes sell to real buyers, or did Ducati just have someone bid on them to save face? Was the bidding up to the reserve just a charade? I have seen some auctions were the auctioneer is taking bids from the chandelier just to make it seem like there was interest in the item, and the seller basically bids the high bid and gets the item back.

Both Desmosedici bikes went to real buyers. Bid up to reserve on fake bids, genuine bidder came in and took bike in single bids. In other words they only had one buyer on each and did the deal before.
I knew the reserve before the bikes came up.

overall 7 cheap bikes didnt sell. Knocked down on fake bid with no buyers on them.
Offered around post auction as a jób lot to get rid of them.
