I thought an update on my search for a suitable SP5, might be of interest.
First of all, many thanks to all who have taken the time to provide helpful information about the important characteristics of these special bikes, and as a novice this is very much appreciated.
I have made enquiries about a number of bikes in UK, and also some in Europe.
The issue with importing a bike from outside UK post-Brexit, is that it may be liable for import administration charges, duty and import VAT on the total cost of the transaction including the purchase price. Also, to complete the UK HMRC NOVA process, required prior to registration for road use in UK, an authorised Agent is needed to deal directly with HMRC, if the transaction is made by a private individual. Overseas transactions are also potentially complicated by distance and language, unless an intermediary is available.
As has been recommended for any bike, a primary requirement is verification that the bike is actually what it is advertised to be, and the original VIN (Frame) and Engine Numbers are the starting point, this is crucial in the case of an imported bike, particularly if confirmation from DMH is needed.
The most common issue that has arisen so far, concerns the Engine number stamped, or missing, from the crankcases. If the crankcases have been changed, and the original stamped cases are available, or confirmation of the change and transfer of the engine components is available, that may be sufficient. However, if there is no information to explain a missing or alternative number/format, then it may not be possible to verify the engine status before purchase, which is a significant risk for an SP5. As previously noted, the original format for the VIN on the headstock and the Engine Number on the crankcase, is of the dot-matrix typeface for the SP5 and later.
Other matters related to missing or exchanged cycle parts, while potentially costly, may be manageable in the longer term.
Clearly, buying from a trusted source is ideal and would be preferred, but if not possible, careful inspection and a documented history of a bike of interest is essential.
Presently, there are two bikes that I am still evaluating, but they both would require some work after purchase, and this is not reflected in the current asking price.
I apologise if this is a little long winded, but I wanted to explain how I got to where I am.
Any further comments, suggestions and advice are definitely welcome to inform progress, and will all be considered carefully.
Once again, many thanks to all who are helping my search.
Tom.
