tboooe Glad the mirror stickers worked for you! As for the Ohlins fork stickers, there a member on the Facebook 851/888 SP page that is having some OEM looking stickers made. You may want to head over that that page and add your name to list of people who would like purchase a set.
guillaume69 Thanks for your answer, Tommy. So far, I am pretty happy with how things turned out: And I must confess I am not on FB, so no access to all the groups there.
Gaz92 They look better. I ordered some rectangular ones but yellow was too yellow, that looks a good shade. Cheers Gaz
guillaume69 At last I started my deep dive in this bike. I was able to ride a couple hundred miles before starting and there was nothing to report. Except pure bliss, that is… 🙂 So earlier this week, I went in and removed the fairings and fuel tank to get a closer look. It’s a beautiful machine, really.. Even more so in the details Injection looks fantastic too
guillaume69 The aluminum fuel tank is spotless, inside and out I found the airbox without a lid. I expected it to be with an « opened » lid, but none at all? Is that standard on SP2s? I understand better why the air induction noise is so loud The air filter looks a little worn… It is a K&N, dated 2003, and not that clean anymore, so it will be replaced by a brand new one.
Desmonut guillaume69 I have a 1991 SP3 and the air box is identical, i.e. open and VERY noisy. It’s good to read your input and compare notes with my slightly later model. I wish I had the original pipes for mine - unfortunately they were irreparably damaged in an ‘off’ many years ago.
guillaume69 Checked the clutch (discs, basket, drum, slave, push rod, o-rings, pressure plate bearing, etc.) and did a bit of cleaning as it was fairly dusty. Almost back to its original glory, overall in really good shape and most importantly, works a treat!
guillaume69 As I was checking the clutch slave, I went to clean an check the front sprocket and found that the retaining plate was looking rusty and a little worn. That will have to be replaced along with a pair of new screws, as these proved a bit reluctant to come out. Also piggy backed a set of big starter cables from Exact Fit for peace of mind. Next will be replacing the OEM reg/rec by a Mosfet one due to the LiFePO4 battery. I also intend to remove and grease the swing arm shaft and reset the TPS and synch the two cylinders. Stay tuned ! 😎
tboooe Thank you for the great pics! I will tearing into my SP2 in the very near future as I need to do a valve adjustment and timing belt replacement. Considering its age, your bike looks to be in really nice condition. Mine is in pretty good shape too but some paint on the engine cover by the clutch slave is beginning to flake off and the paint on the frame is showing little cracks everywhere. I am contemplating if I should completely strip the bike and restore it, or leave it as is in its original state.
guillaume69 Here’s to a brand new K&N air filter With just that and overall cleaning done, surprise, the bike now holds cold idle at 1000 rpm without having to rev it up by hand for a couple minutes like it used to. What a great satisfaction! Was it just a clogged up/dirty air filter then? I did not mess with TPS/Synchro/idle mixture as I originally intended to… Just a new air filter.
guillaume69 Thanks griff851 Over here, there’s Carmo Electronics in the Netherlands. They specialize in Mosfet r/r as well as ECU repairs/upgrades. They are pretty good. https://www.carmo.nl/index.php?main_page=index&language=en&zenid=r7kb2taibrpp8tdt3qs6ca1k77 PS: Griff, do you still offer radiator guards options ? I would be interested for this bike. Thanks in advance !
jakepeewee guillaume69 I bought a mosfet regulator at Carmo, but that one drew a small current. I ended up buying a used Shindengen mosfet regulator of a Panigale 959, works flawless. BTW got the same Shido battery and made the new 'improved' starter cables myself. Bike starts and runs great (SP3). Set up for the airbox (no lid) is exactly how it is on my SP3.
guillaume69 jakepeewee I have Carmo r/r on my three bikes and so far, no complaints at all. And yes, Lithium high CCA battery + big starter cables = instantaneous start every time. No more starter and/or sprag issues.
KevB tboooe re hoses I did similar; when I upgraded the brakes hoses to Hel braided steel on my 888 I had them covered in in black tube to keep the 'oem' look.
guillaume69 I finally opted to fabricate my own radiator shields. I have started with the smaller oil cooler one and even though the result is not cosmetically perfect, it still fits really well, is properly secured in place and should provide long term protection. On to the water cooler now. 😎
griff851 Too easy hey😄. When you put the fairing on, or anything really, and you have any contact points and you’ve done adding spacers to the point holes don’t line up, I use Teflon tape. Surfaces have to be chemically clean. The type used for vacuum bag food bags. As long as it’s a light touch. It hangs in there for a fair while. If it’s a hard push, well…… the offending item has to to be moved or modified.
guillaume69 Griff, I must admit that, at first, I did not understand what you meant in your above post. Then I realized your were concerned about clearance between the lower fairing and the bottom corners of the oil cooler shield. I went and double checked for contact/rubbing points and there’s a solid 5 mm clearance, when fairing is pushed in to the max. Additionally, the shield edges are covered with soft rubber material so that should protect from any rubbing, should it occur. But thanks for having me check this twice! 👍️
KevB guillaume69 I really should do this for my 888 and 916. That wlll be a small winters day project and if you don't mind I will likely follow your idea which is elegant in it's simplicity. :-)
