What engine oil do you use?

Use Motul 300V Factory line fully synthetic 20W50 in my 1991 851. Don't drive in the winter as too much snow and ice in denmark. Baines Racing at Silverstone once told me 'no matter what anyone tells you, only use 20W50 in you 851'. And that is what i do....

Always use Shell fully syn, used it when I was racing H*ndas. Also used Rockoil at that time as I was sponsored by them and got it free, never found any problems with it although it was changed after every race.

A certain Mr J Dunlop always swore by Shell, it was quite funny to see Shell oil going into Castrol Hondas at his workshop!

Klotz, 20/50 synthetic. I'm in central florida. I use this based on the recommendation of Sebastion at Melilli Moto. he tells me this is what B. Meyer at BCM used. oh and the sweet,fruity smell doesn't hurt.

Has anyone tried a straight 50w mineral oil? I've read that it solved some big-end bearing issues in the Supermono. I currently use (have to) Valvoline VR1 Racing 50w oil in one of my mowers (Kawasaki engine) as the crankshaft bearings are worn and it's the only way to keep the thing running...since the bearings aren't replaceable...the engine cases have to be replaced (yeah right!). I religiously use Mobile 1 15w50 in my bikes, but the VR1 is half the price at under $4.

Many years ago a mate put straight 50 in his Pantah, as he believed all ducatis ran straight 50. The cages on his mains broke. They still use the same mains. Bevels run low pressure high volume pumps. I wouldn't recommend it in 888's

That's ok cuz I wimped out and got the Mobile 1. I couldn't justify taking a chance for a couple of bucks. I've been using Mobile 1 for years with no probs, so I will continue to do so. It was for my 900ss, I can only dream of putting some fresh oil in my 851/888😎 ...for now.

used Valvoline 20W50Racing nowadays VR1 the last 30 years of riding Ducati's, because of the number of roller bearings.
I'll stick to that one.

I am having trouble sourcing 20-50 in my area. Most bike places sell 10-40. Is there any real issue with using 10-40 or even 5-40 in an 851?

Sorry, should have said I live in Southern England where the hottest temperature ever recorded is still less than 100F and it mainly rains.

Shell Ultra or Motul 300V are both 20/50 fully synth', Rock Oil also do a 15/50 fully synth'.
Any of these will "do the do" for your bike and they're widely available via the net.
It's just getting them at the right price!
If I can nail down the price I'll be buying a 25 lt drum of the Motul when I've used the last of my stock, a mate's just got a dealership with Motul. 😁

i use 10W50 full synthetic from AGIP or ELF in my 888 and 916.
and there is 10W50 half synthetic in my SS now from KERNITE.

I am using Motul 300V 15W50 in Malaysia, where it doesn't get very cold. I will have to see if I can get a drum of it here.

Hi Mike,
I've got a couple of drums racked up with taps fitted in them in my workshop.
At the moment it's Rock Oil Synth 4 and Rock Oil TRM 40/60 race engine oil.
In the past (over the last 25 years or so) I've had drums by Castrol, Shell, Morris and Rock Oil, I'm fairly sure that I can can get 25lt drums from Motul.
I'll enquire next week and find out if Motul will supply 25 lt drums.

P.S. I've got your disc centres and I'm on the case mate, didn't you say that you've got some Corse yolks?

Glad to hear that they got to you safely. No, I'm afraid it wasn't me with the Corsa yokes, I wish it was. I think Heizer300 talked about getting copies made a while back.

I will be very interested to hear how you get on with the centres.
