Just a quick survey to see out of the 600 odd members, what oil are you using now in your 851/888? Just the oil, your location (for temp range) and a quick why would be interesting.
Mr R is using a self brewed mix of Fully snyth' Bel Ray 20/50 and Rock Oil 5/40 Synth4 at 50/50% Location Southern UK.
Marvin is using full syn. Rock Oil, North Carolina USA because his mate has it.
I use Silkolene Pro 4, because thats what Bob stocks. Brisbane Australia Sub-tropical.

shell advance ultra and VSX4 in the 750M, because we sell shell in bulk. melbourne, aust.

shell vsx4 exclusively, have always used it back to the quaddro days with the odd slip where it got motorex at a service. and i knew it was different oil cause it didn't shift anywhere near as well.

I used to use Agip Racing 4t 20w-50 full synth and change the oil religiously at 500 miles on all my bikes. The oil was so good after change that I would use the old oil in my diesel pickup truck. Tear-downs would reveal my motors in awesome shape.
But that got pretty costly and now I use Mobile 1 15w-50 full synth in all my bikes....still try to change every 500-1000 miles or so.
Everyone on this list should change their engine oil before and after the bike is sitting for months on end (like Winter... if you have Winter where you liveπ ). Reason being is that used oil contains contaminants and becomes acidic... this is not a good thing for your engine.

Come on now guys....chime in about what motor oil you use in your 851/888. You don't want to hurt Griff's feelings!π

I use dead dinosaur oil in my 851. I have never in the 16 years that I've owned it never used anything except Valvoline 20/50 motorcycle oil, in spite of the Agip sticker on the cases....I'd be afraid to stick some synthetic in it at this point. The added unctuosness (I love that word!) of the synthetic might make some of the old seals leak and my goal for this bike is preservation. And a bit of riding.....

Motorex Topspeed 15W50 semisynthetic works for me. Reason: I don't go out to ride in winter temperatures (snow in the Netherlands at this time) and I believe the roller bearings and rockers in Ducs appreciate a slightly thicker oil.

I use Mobil 1 15W50 fully synthetic, as it's easy to obtain in the UK (Halfords) and I believe the higher viscosity to be good for the cams and rockers. I've always used it in my 100,000+ mile 900ss, and the cams and rockers are still perfect. I've had to replace the mains a few times, though.

I used to use Castrol GT 20W50 as I believed anything wet and slippery, if changed often enough was sufficient. Here in Oz I've moved on to Motul 1000/3000 20W50 as its readily available at my Ducati dealer.
However, since reading the attached I've decided to move to Mobil 1 synthetic as the cost differential is not that great with the "fancy" minerals and the benefits seem to be incontrovertible.

Ok, so not much in the way of a response other than those that are true of heart. So I hooked up the Llama's testicles to the Alternator wires, and hit the start button. He's not so cute now is he....
Last chance.... Could get messy soon!

I always use Mobil 1 15:50.
jimmi851
I always use Q8 SBK15/50 for all our bikes ( 851-748-M600) and change at
every 3000km with new filter every second change.
Ops, forgot to mention I live in the south of sweden and we have snow and ice for the moment.π

Shell Advance for me.Tried Mobil and it smoked alot, went to shell and no problems!!
Mr.R
Hi everyone,
I usually use the best oil that I can find at the right price, today I had a bit of a shock as I normally buy my oil in 25lt drums so it tends to last a while...
My best mate who gets me anything that I want at cost/trade prices quoted me Β£240 for 25lt of Motul 300V 15-50, the last drum I bought of Rockoil Synth4 was Β£120...
Now of late the petrol/gas price has dropped by 25% after hitting an all time high over the last couple of months, at the same time engine oil and 2 stroke oil has risen by 50%...
Something here isn't adding up to my way of thinking?

My last oil change was part of a major service by the dealer and they use Shell Advance, so I'll probably stick with that, but previous Dukes I've run on Mobil 1.
