The Sp runs well at 50c then when stopped it climbs to 100c and the coolant voids out the expansion cap. I suspect the thermostat not opening early enough. Any suggestions on replacement units compatible and also the cap is interchangeable with which models?

I would suspect a head gasket as a favourite. Sorry. 🙁

Something screwy going on there. Running temp is way low a 50°C, it should be 80 ish. By expansion cap do you mean radiator cap or expansion bottle cap. If its the radiator cap, then just replace it as it should hold way more pressure than 100° will generate. If its ted, it will open and push coolant out of the expansion tank.
First off get a one of those laser temp gauges, ($12. from china, mine is 4° out) and find out whether your gauge is reading right. You could have the wrong sender fitted.
Once thats sorted, test for head gasket blown.

Just thinking some more, and if 50 is 80, then 100 isss? Over heat over 120-130 requires an oil change. Could be blocked radiator, or head gasket, radiator cap or jammed thermostat or ?.... I'm out. Need to do some more investigation.

99% sure it will be a head gasket problem, probably not what you wanted to hear mate.

Ok head gasket, why? Engine is shut down and it vomits coolant. Where is the pressure coming from? The last charge in one of the cylinders? Why doesnt it push air while its running and hence vomit while its running. Or is it sucking while running. Then exh will have burnt coolant in the port. Water blows the crud away but leave white hard crap splattered around. Not saying it is or isnt, just whats the logic?
Mr.R
Motor gets hot, expands, head gasket gets a small gap and the pressure pushes coolant out into the tank.
I'm not oversure of the science, but it almost always points to a head gasket problem.
There's been several forum members who haven't wanted to hear this and chased rad caps, blocked rads, thermostats etc, but it's almost always turned out to be a head gasket problem.
I myself found my overflow bottle holding more coolant than it should after a fast run?
I went down the easy route of swapping the rad cap etc, but it turned out to be a head gasket problem.

at a loss
Thanks Steve ( et al ). I knew "the Knowledgeable Sage" would come forth..............
I did the usual thermo check in the pan of hot water and alls well. Rad was flushed when I had it out recently and I'll try the cap but I'll be talking to Ian Gowenloch about the "head job".
Steve: I'm staying in Sulby for the GP but sans wheels. I'll plan a get together then.

Hey Whitto, There is Gowanloch Ducati and Ian Gowanloch, not associated with each other anymore I believe.

Theres the original and the shop
Yes , Ian is the one and only, now farming pigs in the Highlands around Tumut NSW and trading as Ital parts and Mike Sonderland who took over at Gowenlochs at Kingsgrove in Sydney.

I just checked you're profile, looks like you're in the vicinity of Ian anyway.

I thought Ian was in the Bellingin area

You might be thinking of Arthur Davis at Byron Bay aka Desmo HQ ?

Isn't Ian's Happy Farm on Racecourse Rd in Adelong?

Agree with all that. I did exactly the same. So, there are least two of us that have had the same symptoms and both have ended up as blown head gaskets.

2nd strike...whats the third
Well we've played with various possible combinations and today changed the cap ( very soft spring in the original) and let idle to get up to temp when it stopped.Total loss of starting......no power to the fuel pump...all fuses correct , only one pole in the plug with power....yes the pump bench tested ok.....so now time for a beer and listen to IOM TT radio...tomorrow's another day. 😳

You've made the only logical decision at the end of the day

Unplug and then plug back in the ecu plug. If it starts, you might get lucky and things will return to normal. Spirius signals to the ecu might explain the temp issue. It might be trimming itself incorrectly. While going on the road it super rich hence running cool. Then back to idle and leans itself out stupidly.
Just a possibility.
Last year at the lord of the lakes race meeting, that Auzzie 888 that ran at last years TT was there. It had the same fault as it had at tge TT. WOT at about 11k and it would shut down then fire up again. The owner asked if I had access to an ecu and a tps, as thats what appeared to fix the issue at the TT. I thought that was a tad extreme, so instructed his mechanic. (Not Sean) to unplug everything and plug it back in. Whalah! Problem solved. Happy race team, Griffy gets to smirk to himself, then go back to the 250 single. KISS. Then if that fails go for the heavy stuff.

which model is it, and where is the thermo fan switch?
