Here are some photos of a project that I completed earlier this year. The bike takes the concept of an 851 with an ST4S engine one step further, using not only the ST4S engine, but the frame and forks as well. The ST4S has the same wheelbase, rake and trail as the 851/888, and the chassis is similar, apart from the rear subframe and suspension linkage arrangement. The rear part of the ST4S frame was modified to accept the '92 851 strada seat unit. As the engine is 15mm further forward in the frame on the ST4S, I used a modified 900SS front fairing mount to place the fairing 15mm further forward than it would be on the 851/888. The bars are also modified 900ss items, and are angled downwards less steeply than 851 bars (making the bike suitable for touring as you can see from photo 3 of the bike in the Pyrenees!)
The obvious visual differences from an 851 are the absent rear suspension linkage, the extra frame tube above the rear engine mount and the 43mm TiN coated forks. The ST top fork yoke has the brake and clutch reservoirs fitted to the handlebar mounting holes, and I used a Veglia electronic tachometer from a Moto Guzzi, as the ST4S engine has no drive for a mechanical one. The exhaust is from an ST4 with suitable outlets welded into the collector box to take 851 silencers.
Brief specification:
Engine, frame, swinging arm & suspension linkage, forks ST4S
Fuel tank, bodywork '92 851
Fairing side panels SP2/SP3
Wheels, wiring harness ST2
Front fairing mount, clip-ons modified 900ss items
ECU 1.6M with Ducati performance ST4 racing EPROM.

That turned out well, and thanks for the tacho tip. I was wondering where I was going to get one from. I got my P8 from a Guzzi.

kewl, kinda modern 851.😎

I'm thinking about doing the same as 888's are now priced out of my league.
I have an eye on a very cheap st4 damaged repairable.......
As soon as i have found a 888 tank the ball will be rolling 😄

That's how it started for me. I had a tatty ST4 and had always wanted an 851. I knew the ST/Monster frame was derived from the 851/888 so I did some Google research and saw this bike. I found an 888 tank and a few other bits that I thought I'd need .... and then I found an 851 frame.
18 months later and the bike still isn't finished!😏
Good luck with your build!

VERY nice job. That looks stunning.Well done.

I have bought a ST4 for £950 in vgc 😄
All fairings, tank, and all other stuff not needed have been removed.
(Ebay bound)
I'm currently trying to do a deal on a 888 tank 😄
Which is getting close!

I have now struck a deal, one 888 tank in vgc will be on it's way to me soon. 😄

Here's my project, major surgery is needed on the rear end of the frame.
I'm going to adapt a 888 rear subframe as i reckon this is the easy route. 😄
BTW the centre stand will be removed before it's on the road 😁

Looks great!!

Hi Steve ID,
I'll echo what Marvin's posted it's looking real good mate, when it's finished you'll have to take the looong trip down to Cornwall for me to have a real close up eyeball, then take you for a ride down some of the fantastic roads we've got local to where I live.
I had a great ride back over Dartmoor last night, on my way back from my day on the dyno up at CJS/Chris Steedman's workshop.
I've only to lockwire the Lambda sensor plug blanks back into place, swap the back wheel, (and raise the gearing*) fit the fairing and give it all a good clean before setting off for the TT tomorrow lunchtime.😁
*It's waaay too short for the latest tunes power, I'm pretty chuffed after the day on the dyno mate.

Thanks Marvin and Steve (Mr R) 😄
Steve,
Chris (CJS) knows his stuff mate 😎
I really want the bike on the road asap it's still taxed and tested.
So not important stuff can wait untill the dark depths of winter!
I have had this week off work and done all Mrs ID's jobs on her list so i'm free tomorrow to get the front sub frame welded, remove centre stand, fit side stand (900ss type) drill and mount fairing, spray the front subframe.
Bits i need
clutch (watching one)
rear sub frame (888)
cam belts
carbon cans (watching)
high level link pipes(need adapting to fit st4 headers)
clocks (watching)
Tin of ducati frame touch up paint!
non return valve/fitting which fits on bottom of fuel tank
Fuel pump
degasser
fuel filter
520 C/S kit
Headlight surround rubber
rubber air scoops
Get the tank sprayed red
decals
flush mount signal lights
think thats it!

BTW Steve your a lucky old boy going to the TT!
My Dads fuming with my Step mother for booking him a surprise party....
We were supposed to be going to the TT this year to mark His 65th B Day. 😡
Mr.R
Steve ID,
Hold off on the paint until you've got all of the brackets welded on and those that don't need to be there thrown in the bin, when you're 100% sure you've got it to where you want it, then get it painted White as it's the only colour for a 851/888 frame, it's Iconic with the early Ducati 4 Valve Superbikes.
A bit like owning a Green frame 750SS.
Nessie Mrs R holds off until I've gone over for the TT, then she does all of the jobs I should have done whilst I've been playing with my bikes...
Then gives me the bill for the cost of the materials when I get home.
