stafford wroteJust found this, have you found you have to machine the outer top edge of the Pistals to clear the 996 heads?
Hi Stafford,
Are you upgrading/upsizing to a 996cc motor for your race 888?
For my 955cc motor, I got hold of some Corse spec 96mm Pistals and they would've touched the 888 "G" heads at the sides without some form of modification.
I modified the combustion chambers to clear them and to unshroud the 37/32mm valves, also modifying the piston crowns to drop the comp' ratio to 11.8-1*
(it's a road bike so needs to run happily on V Power etc) and to clear the bigger valve heads.
The 37mm inlet valves (up from 34mm) needed to be sunk/cut back slightly into the heads to get a good valve seat and to stop them clashing/hitting the 32mm exhaust valves.
I went for the 32mm exhausts to try and gain some radius on the bottom of the ports, as the old fashioned "G" ports are just a bit too big for the original 30mm items really.
*The Pistals were 12.8-1 in standard 916SP heads, I was aiming for 12-1 but the reshaping of the chambers brought it down just a bit lower than I wanted.
