Hi Mark,
That pile of parts is just too interesting to not be able to zoom in on for a closer look. Are you able to set your camera for higher resolution shots? This is going to be a great story and I for one am looking forward to your pictures.

No I was well referring about your engine axle (2nd pic).😄

I know original parts are in steel, but as it's a Factory bike, they should have used better parts were they wanted, to reduce maximum weight (they did in machined it at least).
Original engine axles are just SHCS screw M10x240 in 8.8 class (as most of the rest of engine/bike screws).
So the same part in Ti Gr5 would have better mechanical characteristics than standard 8.8 steel screw, and would be around 40% much lighter.
I was wondering if they did it or not ?

Marvin's spot on here,
When I bought my 12mm Nichols engine bolts they were steel as I'd expected but...
I was very surprised when it came down to machining the sleeve nuts*, when it then became apparent that they were actually made from Titanium. 😎
Having now seen Mark's pic' of his genuine works engine bolt and looking into my crystal ball?? I can see some time being spent on the lathe by me.

*I was converting my 851/916cc motor to 12mm bolts, for extra strength and to make it easier to swap between it and my 955 or 984cc ST4 cased motor.
As it was for a "Hybrid" motor Nichols didn't have anything/bolts that would "Drop In" to do the job.

I don't remember what I ordered from Nichols but I have 12mm bolts in my bike. It may be because the 851/888 has one shorter nut that goes behind the batter box.??

My Apology to Marvin---I completely missed what you were asking BABA- and Marvin got it.

I have not checked if it was Ti. I assumed that it would be high strength steel and waisted to be a stretch bolt. I will give it a check tomorrow.

I took the picture in RAW fine so my original picture is high resolution-- but I normally put low resolution pictures on the forum- do you want me to send you the Raw file or something a bit more tame.

I recall that's the reason, but I ended up turning some off of all of them.

Well the fancy engine bolt in this factory bike is high strength steel-- not Ti. Not sure this closes the question but this is what the factory used on the early Corse's.

Spent the last two days taking the paint off of the frame and rear sub-frame. Cup wire wheel took most of the three layers off and then stuck the frame in my small bead blaster where 1/3 of the frame sticks out of the side door- put on googles and a mask and had at it. Frames are just a pain to clean off.

Here are a few more tid-bits on this bike. The frame number is hand stamped. Cool how the factory mechanics heated and bent the fuel inlets so the hoses would route better. They also stamped the injector number on the top of each fuel inlet and painted it red. They had a thing about red letters those first years.

Sorry to be so slow answering. No - please don't send me pictures specially, and I'm not a computer techie so I'm just questioning here. Some pictures on here you can click on and click on once again to zoom, which I think is really helpful. My camera is set to 1600x1200 and you can zoom on those. For example: http://www.ducati851and888.com/attac...2&d=1422974046 1600x1200 is the dimension of that photo. Is that too big a file for posting on this forum? Why do you reduce the size of your photos for posting here? Are we supposed to? I love your photos, just dying to look in close.

Roland was surprised and confirmed that the WSBK regulations in early 90's, didn't accept TI on bikes, due to the higher rate of sparks , compare with steel and then open to immediate firing with fuel on the asphalt, in case of falls !!!

Mechanics concerned by the past with Ducati "Works" bikes used to signed with red stamped letters and figures. Roland made that for me recently ... 😉
