After the 1036 Testerstretta project I needed something else to keep me amused. I bought an old race bike from John Bakker in the NL that he already campaigned for 3 seasons with a 1098 engine it it. As part of the deal he put in a fresh 1198 engine. It was a runner but IT needs finishing. I want to do the same as I did with the other project and put it on the street. Basically apart from the instruments being 1198 I want the rest to be as close to 888 race as you can have on the street. It is early days but I am stripping her down for a make over. I will try and post more photos as I go along. First job to get the white period Dymags to fit to compliment the white frame. And an airbox instead of the modified plastic bucket from the 1198 engine. Why have lovely , huge oval bellmouths on a massive injection system (63,9mm equivalent) if you can,t flip the tank and see them ?????.

Yes an extra tube for the swinging arm pickup as the bearings are in the swinging arm. A big boss was welded on the front and machined out to take the bearings. Some mods were made on some cross members to fit in the injection system.............the rest is stock.

It is a genuine 851 frame with the cross brace removed leaving loads of space for an airbox. As you can see I mocked up in cardboard based on the one from my project 1036 , however the positions of the trumpets are different but in principle the same can be done. The loop of plastic you see over the injector will be removed and a plastic bracket attached on top of the bell mouth connecting each other (Just like a 999). I will make with 1.5mm sheet plastic and then see if I feel like making it from Carbon.
Exhaust is already made albeit with modern monster Carbon silencers so I have removed those (As one was damaged) and have a set of tri ovals being made , the same as the 1036.

So this is where the bike has ended up. I was offered it a while ago and considered buying it. Still must have photos from how the rebuilt was in progress then (about 7 months ago).

Yes I could not resist this one with the 1198 engine. It sits nicely next to my 1038 Testersteretta 888 SP4 . Just thought I would post some photos of the newly finished airbox. It is now sealed and is waiting for the larger fuel injection unit (Equivalent to 63.9mm) to arrive so I can fit to the bike. Basically it is 1.5mm sheet plastic (So it forms a little) pop riveted together (more than 100) on top of the original base unit. If you slice the airbox leaving about 10mm of the top section you have something to fix onto. All I need to do now is to get some fuel injector brackets made to hold the injectors over the bellmouths in the correct position. I have a friend with CAD so I will try and get some 3D printed parts made............it will look cool when you tilt open the tank.

That looks great. Sheet plastic is a good idea! I made mine out of sheet aluminum TIG welded, a big PITA !

I did think about Aluminium also but the plastic is easy to work on and looks good on top of the Lower side of the Ducati airbox. I have ordered some black plastic caps to go over the inside of the pop rivets , firstly as it will look better and secondly it will stop any of the metal of the rivets dropping off and falling into the engine if for any reason they let go. If I silicon the caps on they will never come off. Most of the outside rivets will be covered up by the rubber foam strip needed to seal the box to the underside of the tank. Of the other rivets that show I will paint matt black. I want this to look as close to factory as I can get. The box is very strong with this construction..............more than strong enough. I have just ordered up some 3mm Carbon plate so I can make a flat plate to replace the 4th bridge construction to hold the 2 injection unit together on the underside of the box (It weight 450 grams). It looks way over engineered for me and what does it do ? Where can the injectors go as they are clamped in rigid rubber holders that have there own positioning and fixed by 3 bolts into the rigid airbox. There are Carbon race parts to replace this plate but at 20 time the price it will cost to make my own I will give it a go myself. The worst I can do is learn something and if it works (I,m sure it will) I will lighten the bike by 350 grams (More pies and beer for me). It has taken about 30 hours so far to think, make prototype and make this but I am proud it works and looks good. Another 10 hours should see it finished.

Modelled up the injector brackets today with the help of a friend with CAD. Basically it is clamped around the original trumpet and sits all around the lip for stability. Once the M5 screws are fitted it will go nowhere. Another friend works for a company that does 3D printing so parts will come in 2 weeks and come in Alumide 3D printed material. Price came out at 200 euros complete so will look the dogs and well worth the agggggggg !!!!!.

Latest update . All the cables have been moved to the outside of the frame to make way for the air coming in, also the rectifier was moved from the front just behind the headstock. I fitted a 916 battery box with the underslung rectifier bracket and took the time to mount the starter solenoid there as well. When I fitted the box again without all of the cables in the way I noticed that the air coming in from the air intakes will be too small. I immediately got on the K and N website for a larger filter and have found something that will require moding but should do the trick (40% more air). Also measured up for the rear wheel spacers , made drawings and should get them next week. I,m using a Dymag that is a 6 inch wide requiring spacing out the hoop fixings on the swinging arm (Chain would touch). Standard 888 top yoke went off for machining as the 1098r one on the bike is not to my taste , I can then fit the ignition key. I also replaced a lot of standard bolts with Titanium and anodised alloy ones (Very therapeutic). Also today I got the 3D printed fuel injector brackets and they fitted perfectly, they will do the job very nicely. Next thing to model up is a bridge so I can tie wrap the fuel and electrical cables..........should look nice. Injector brackets will be sprayed matt black.

Latest photos of the 119888...............coming along but some tricky things to get right for the road. Making a race bike is easy...............trying to find the place to put all the stuff for the road is another thing. Also so it can be serviced easily and rebuilt by someone other than me. I also want it to look perfect and have the right 888 parts on it.................like getting an 888 Top yoke machined up to fit with the period look I want from the bike . I,ve finally got the rear wheel spacers made and inline (6 inch wide) and sorted the right brake bracket giving me the connection for the speedo. I got lucky and found the correct one after comparing a 999 one I had (Spindle was too big, offset to flat). A bracket from a modern 696 went in with only a tiny mod to the swinging arm (Removed 2mm material where the stud is to stop the bracket rotating). I used a 999 rear disc as the one on the dymag was smaller in diameter however the 999 disc has a 2mm different PCD (?) so had to be moded. You can see the bolt does not sit in the middle of the hole anymore...........for now it works but I might change that if I can find the correct one.
The brake line is too long so I will fit a shorter brake line when I,ve decided what to do with the footrest (Racing pattern at present and I want the road pattern). It would be nice to get some Carbon parts but that will also be racing types. Does anyone know of a nice set of road footrest for sale somewhere ?.

The bikes looking great so far, I've loved following this thread as I love building this sort of project but...
Personally I'd be worried about that much torque/power in a 851/888 chassis?
The last 926cc race 851/888's were putting out around 140 rwbhp and they'd found the limits of the chassis. 😯
However I'm pretty sure that I've still got a full set of road footrests etc for a '92 onwards 851/888 kicking around in fairly good condition.
Let me know if this is what you're after and I'll have a dig around in my spares stash for you.

I think some of the "too much power for the frame" had been addressed by the addition of the extra support to the rear of the engine like the 916 onward has.

Mr R if you could have a dig around for those footrest that would be great. I,m after the 888 look in any way I can but finding those things now is getting difficult. Photos please.
My other beast with the 1036cc Testerstretta engine chucking out 165 Hp and 130 Nm RWP seems to handle the power no problem..............this will be another animal. Don,t forget the engine is also a stressed member and a newer engine can only be better.

So I have been busy buying lots of stuff and things are being delivered.
Jobs so far since the last update............
Loads of bolts replaced with Titanium ones
Ducati 999 LH handlebar control fitted with the cables harness for a 1198. I thought the 1198 one was too huge and had some mode switches which looked out of place. The micro switches are hidden in the 999 control as you need them to program the dash sometimes.
New racing rear sets for the road turned up to give me the gear pattern for the road. I need to sort the linkage for the brake reservoir but now mounted with lovely Titanium bolts.
Racing carbon dash bracket came so that has now been modified and the 1198 instruments fitted.
Carbon Intake system plus side and top plate came (Made by a forum member) and look the business.
Ignition surround for the immobilser now fitted so now I can work out all of the front intake system.
Also sorted out the problem of the fuel line and electrical cables for the airbox. I will have external connectors so it will be easier to fit these after the airbox is fitted. Stupid large 4th bridge construction under the airbox has been junked as I coud,nt see the point of it (Saved 450 grams). Airbox fits fine and the trumpets are solid as a rock.
Exhaust canister have turned up but a mistake on ID and OD means I will have to modify the ends of the exhaust. They were 4 weeks late so I am reluctant to send them back.
Lots of jobs still to do but working slowly through the list.
Does anyone have a drawing of the front fairing brackets (Photo attached) that attach to the carbon racing inlets and help fit the front and side fairings in position. They are normally Aluminium but can come in Carbon. Or does anyone have any for sale before I make a set ?
