Just got an 888 SP4, a few questions for the forum

I shut mine down at just over 9.5K as it was all but over by then, however at that point it's kicking 8 rwbhp more than your little 888 does at 10.5K*, my motor will happily rev onto 10.5K still be making 120+ rwbhp and making more torque than your factory homologation special.
What's that saying that comes tol mind here? Oh yes it's "All show and no go!"

*If you were to rev your bike to 11 or 12K I very much doubt that it would get anywhere close to 128 rwbhp, Hackett built/tuned 851,888/926 SP's aren't making that sort of power.

Mark T's ex factory/FBF 888/955cc makes 136 rwbhp at god knows what revs?

My standard production bike is fine with only 120rwbhp, John said i would probably see another 2-3bhp, but in all fairness I really wasn't chasing numbers! but with all it's show carbon and mag it's probably pushing less weight than yours. Certainly with me on it!! 😉

Well it is where my '69 441 came from, right? That bike taught me a whole lot about riding and wrenching, and I guess I'll always have a soft spot in my head for that place, regardless of its size. Snap shots are from a '70 southern New Jersey enduro and in the New Hampshire White Mountains in '71.

Ogri, after trawling the internet I have found the performance figures for your Airfix kit 88916!

Figures obtained by Italian bike magazine "In Moto".
Standing Quarter Mile acceleration times (& Dyno BHP measured @ the rear wheel)

1993 - 888 Strada = 10.96sec @ 126.10mph (96.77 bhp @ 8,900 rpm)

1990 - 851 SP2 = 10.85sec @ 126.83mph (103.07 bhp @ 10,200 rpm)
1991 - 851 SP3 = 10.78sec @ 128.75mph (108.45 bhp @ 10,200 rpm)
1992 - 888 SP4 = 10.71sec @ 129.62mph (110.57 bhp @ 10,150 rpm)
1993 - 888 SP5 = 10.57sec @ 130.34mph (115.93 bhp @ 10,700 rpm)
1992 - 888 SPS = 10.39sec @ 131.44mph (120.33 bhp @ 10,600 rpm)
1992 - Airfix 88916 = 3 weeks @ 50mph (on an RAC trailer, after another breakdown) 😝

1994 Ducati 916 = 10.68sec @ 128.59mph (99.93 bhp @ 8,900 rpm)

Malcolm aka Johnnie boy aka eight8eight's SP(4)S is a JHP tuned 926, he bottled out* when challenged to a dyno shoot out with the loser paying for the runs and buying the breakfasts.

*He can't recall how much power he's very expensively tuned bike makes?? 😏
It's spent more time in the back of a van going back and forth between his home and at least two top tuners** than my bikes spent on a trailer.
The only two times my old nail has come home on a recovery trailer is after a puncture and when it snapped the chain.

** Spent more money on tuning and rebuilding (in the plural!) his SP(4)S motor than my bike cost to buy in the 1st place.

He is a top bloke though who's been after riding one of my bikes for years now, but when I asked if he'd got anything I'd like to ride? He offered his JHP tuned 926cc SPS, I innocently asked...
"Haven't you got anything better than that?"

But I posted my result up alongside Jasper's earlier in this thread, mines the one (South) that blows his SP5 out of the water right the way through the rev range.
I'm not claiming fantastic (dreamers) figures, rather just saying that they're pretty respectable for a motor nailed together in a shed in Cornwall using mostly 2nd hand, but modified standard parts.

If the one that you've posted is actually a tuned 851cc,888cc,916cc, 926cc or 955cc Ducati motor based on a 851/888 it would be stunning performance...
Even if it were turbo or super charged.
IIRC John Hackett got somewhere around 169 rwbhp from Troy Baylis's BSB Championship wining 996cc Desmoquatro.

Willy Measuring Competition Over - The Final Say

Time to stand up and be measured...

My friend Johnny Barton, TT racer and a 2nd place on a Supermono here is THE man to judge which 851 to whatever cc 888 would really cut the mustard around the TT course.
All you need to do is send me details of your bike: model / cc, wet weight, actual BHP torque and your top 3 modifications or standard fitments and Johnny will determine which in real terms, would be his preferred ride at next year's MANX Grand Prix where they become eligible for the first time.

However there is a catch - your personal wet weight must be added to that of your bike. Anyone blatantly understating their weight will get penalty kg's added - most of us know each other so telling porkies won't work!

I will produce a certificate for the owner of the bike deemed to be the most useful round the course and get Johnny to sign it! Just think of the bragging rights and untold value this will add to your bike...

I'll start the ball rolling-

1992 SP4 916cc, 110hp at 9200, 66NM at 7000 1. Full Ohlins suspension 2. Floating brembos 3. Slick Bass tuned. Wet Bike 205kg, me wet 65kg / 10.5 stone

Of course if you don't want to participate in this trial then any comments in the future about your bike's performance will be treated with much humour/humor and a large dose of salt! 😉

But its owner simply may have. Forgotten the national speed limit that came in in the late sixties😁

Hi Terry, yes the class has been extended to include 851/888's and the RC30 also becomes eligible. The race formats and schedules have also changed for 2013. Practices for 2013 start on Sat 17th to Fri 23rd August.

The opening Manx Grand Prix race, the Newcomers will take place on the morning of Wednesday 28th August, followed in the afternoon by the Junior Manx Grand Prix. Friday 30th August will see the running of the SuperTwins and Lightweight Manx Grand Prix race run concurrently in the morning, culminating in the blue-riband' Senior Manx Grand Prix in the afternoon.

The Classic races which have been part of the Manx' since 1983 have been renamed the Classic TT and will take place over the weekend of 24th & 26th August and will be part of the Isle of Man Festival of Motorcycling, which will include the Manx Grand Prix, the Manx Two-Day Trial, the Classic Trial and Jurby Day.
The Jurby day is an excellent show of all things classic and vintage; you can turn up on the day and do a few laps with any variety of machines. My SP4 was displayed in the Italian M/C tent alongside Supermonos, yes 2 of them, various 916-998 RS's and even an old SS that these bevel owners cherish!

I did briefly consider giving the SP4 to Johnny Barton for 2013 where a good result would double its value and a bad one would reduce it by 100%! 😯
