The 65mm spacing came in with the 916's.

Don't think so Steve. I think 65 mm calipers came in around 1998 onwards.

Steves on the ball with caliper bolt spacing. May have been some lag as they got rid of stock on monsters.
How the arthritis? Just found out i got it too. Too many hours on the brush cutter made me aware. Fishoil and glucosamine tablets. Takes about 6 weeks before they kick in. The cabinetmaker next door is on it. 50yrs old and has now just taken up BMX racing. Not helping his broken ribs.😁

Attached are a couple of 916 images. The first is 1997 and before, the second is obviously a 1998 based upon the ugly Ducati graphics that came out that year. I'm pretty sure the 1997 and prior models had 40mm calipers? Maybe it was different for the UK and Oz?

I didn't say what year they came in with the 916's, (meening the later style Showa forks) just that they had...
None of the 851/888's came with 65mm spacings.

i believe the first with them were the 1997 916sps and st2. the 900ssie had them, but i don't think the monsters got them until 2000. generally coincided with the 25mm hollow axle on the lesser models.

Ok I consult the oracle on Tuesday. Unfortunately was in the shop yesterday and a nice SS with cool Italian flag paint job was there with nasty gravel rash. Had 40mm but didn't look at the year as was preoccupied with the 74 bevel head. Hint no 21. Always put in your own valve guides.

hint no 22. leave the original guides in and k-line them. seems to be a bit of agro associated with replaced guides.

I'm liking k-lining, just read up on it. Unfortunately the damage was done some time ago and the valve guides had to come out. They were the early ones with the oring inside the guide. the bike came in with the owner saying it need a tune. It was flat as hell with no power and the rear plug fowling with oil and a coil breaking down. I changed the valve guide seal and re jetted as somebody before me had tried to lean out an oil leak. And re timed it. Plug still fowling. Pull apart. I checked ring gaps and shit while I had it down. Bores all Ok Gaps were on the edge and the valve seats were at max wear limit, valve guide was pretty worn So told the owner and he agreed to service the head and new rings. New guides (except I didn't get to install the new ones, as the contractor had to shorten the new guides, he replaced them thinking he was doing a favor. Even though I asked for him not to install. The hole didn't look brilliant and I was using the widest valve guide available) Run the bike up and rear plug fowling and oil in the inlet port. *%#K. Pull head apart do check for porosity, and crack check the head. Then after passing tests, punched out the valve guide. Four fifths F#*k all contact, due to some butcherous bastard in the past. Stick in valve guide with Loctite. Now saying appropriate prayers as next its a weld up and start again job, and I'm hoping not to go down that road.
The poor guy had ridden the bike 20,000, then put in for a service and extra get up and go work in 2000. The bike has done 600km since then, and had 4 apparently knowledgeable guys "Fixing it"! None could get it to idle. At least I've got it idling alright now. ( a few plug removals and clean during that process.) Goes well for a 74 blow-bag, until the plug fowls. I don't get o start it up again until wed/thurs to see if my prayers have been answered. Bevels you got ta love em!

I did a quick number application check for 40mm mounted calipers from the 94 900SS I was looking at. This is the list it came up with for one of the part numbers
I did a quick look at early 748 and 916 and they had 65mm. Didn't check specifically 97 or 98. Catalogo has all countries variations on it. Its not perfect though. I could go to 916sps and find them fitted. Then they may or may not come up as a big list like the one here.
