The front wheel is a replacement magnesium Marchesini wheel for a standard Ducati street-bike (888, 900ss). It has a hub that is smaller and wider than the wheel used on either an 888 Customer Corsa or an 888 Works Corsa. The brake rotors are standard Brembo iron rotors that have very little offset (7.5mm) as used on a 900 Superlight, etc. The center hole of the rotor is 68mm, with an 80mm bolt hole pattern.

An 888 Corse front brake rotor has a large offset (25mm), except for the 1994 888/926 when Ducati switched to the narrow-band Brembo rotors with 7.5mm offset (to be used with a Corsa spec 5-spoke Marchesini front wheel with a wider hub, same as early 916 Racing). All Corsa front rotors have an 80mm center hole with a 101.5mm bolt hole pattern.

The rear wheel is a Corsa wheel as it has a 3-bolt mounting pattern for the rear brake rotor, where a street-version wheel (and early 851 Racing) would have a 5 bolt mounting pattern. So the rear axle is probably a larger Corsa size axle.

Mag Marvic's or similar (I couldn't remember how to spell the other well known make. 😉 ) are far from standard road bike kit, they cost back then and now an absolute fortune.

In my period FBF catalouge showing the last 888/926 Corsa for sale the fully floating rear caliper has been done away with*, with the caliper now (back then 😉 ) being mounted road bike style.
There are ways of telling if it's a Corsa swingingarm other than it's length...
Some time back French Phil put up some pic's of both of his Corsa arms and IIRC??
...the cross brace on both of his 888 and 926 where the upper hugger mounts didn't have the large strengthening rib that's found on the road arms.

Maybe the last Corsa arms had this rib? But I've never seen one with it before.

*It appears like this in at least one other of my 851/888 reference books.

Now I hope that you don't mind if I pass on the Xmas Sherry Tom, but I'll take a large splash of Old JD in my coffee mate.
I can't recall anyone on here claiming to be any kind of expert, but there's an awful lot of combined knowledge, experience with members being able to check out their own machines as a cross reference.
Both of my 851's are "Bitsa's" neither of them are Corsa's, although there's a smattering of Corsa parts on them,
but I'm quite happy with both of them.

A few years back I almost bought Mat Llewellen's ex race 888, it was an upgraded/Corsarised SP, but the cost of rebuilding a shagged race bike put me off in the end.
Now with the benefit of hindsight I should have paid the £2.5K that was being asked for it.

I merely want to point out to you and others that commenting in a knee jerk way without being fully informed of the facts can lead to totally incorrect assumptions being made and possible offence to the owner and history of the bike.

When we all have access to anarray of modern communications, it would have taken little effort to find out the bike's history from the most helpful and informative restorer .....

I am pretty sure that I know the photographed bike and if it is the machine that I am thinking of it is an important and well known Corse machine.

Scott, the owner of it does frequent this forum, though I have not spoken to him for a while. He has undoubtedly seen the images but may not wish to express anymore as he may not want people openly knowing exactly what he owns, a point I made about lists when there was all this rubbish talk about an authorised 'SPS list' independent from the factory.

Anyway thanks for posting the images Scott, a lovely looking machine.

Well I doubt John Hackett would have enjoyed me phoning him to ask about that bike, in fact I'm 100% sure of that.
As I've spoken with him many times over the years, he's been a great help to me and once he had a very good friends 926cc SP(4)S in his workshop but refused to comment on a customers bike, that's a mark of the mans professionalism.

Then if he didn't want an open discussion on it he shouldn't have posted pic's of it on an open forum, although there hasn't been any complaints from him.
Of course if he just wanted people to blow smoke up his arse after looking at pic's of his bike he could have said so in the 1st place, like that would work?

Now I for one wouldn't give a tinkers cuss if I posted pic's of one of my bikes and someone or everyone didn't like it, because if I couldn't handle the replies I shouldn't have posted them in the 1st place.
A forum member on here posted pic's that inc' my bike on Ducatisti UK and some of the comments weren't 100% favourable, but I took them on the chin because I'm a big boy, the least said about the comments stating...

No,

"Road bike till proven otherwise" means.....

I look upon any 851-888 'race rep/racebike' to be a converted roadbike, until the owner states it is verified by Ducati as a factory built racer.

Incidentally, I have inspected this bike at JHP and spoken to John about it face to face.

What is the story behind the bike. Is it a factory built Corsa going through a restoration, or is it a collection of parts that is being constructed into a Corsa recreation?

lets say a bike has a real corse frame but not a real corse engine what is it then?
or if it has all the right parts and engine but a replaced frame how do you called it then.

Well I'm not afraid to open that can of worms...
The indentity of most bikes goes with the frame (and log/reg book) in most cases, but (and this's only my opinion) if you were to assemble a bike around a Corse frame using a lot of other non Corsa parts it would be a "Bitsa".
...and there's nothing wrong with a well made "Bitsa" some of them can be better than the bikes they're (possibly?) paying homage to.

A "New" bike put together with all of the correct period/or copied parts is a Replica.

Of course (or is that Corsa? 😏 ) most of this becomes COMPLETE BOLLOX if the owner's too stupid to actually get out and ride the things as they were intended...
As they've missed the point, but again that's just my humble opinion.

I would just like to say how saddened Iam to read of some of the comments made reguarding this thread, and for the record I would also like to say that this is not my machine, although for me its a nice bike.

My intention at first was to open a discussion reguarding another bike found but instead here we have another tit for tat session on all things being correct or not, are we not better than this guys? Can we at least not be civil in what we post its not so hard?.

I for one are proud to be a Forum member I do not know it all for sure but Iam so glad when others help, and I like to do the same when I can but for sure this is a bit of a learning curve.

Steve- It is great that you give your opinion that for you it does not matter if a bike is "factory original" or not- and the reason for these bike's existence is to make you grin when your ride them. That you make that clear-- But then you give it that extra flavor by putting other lovers of these bikes who do care about such thing into a negative category. Not all people who feel that knowing if a part / bike is factory "correct" or not are doing so because they think of the bikes or the parts as investments- some just like to know. When we start making blanket assumptions about people we do not know, what they know, or what motivates them we are saying "I am right and everyone else is messed up in their thinking"-- then we are going from a neutral discussion and into an emotional discussion. This seems to be what is happening when we comment on some of the bikes we see posted.

I am hoping in the future we can keep a bit more neutral and just discuss/debate what we see.

As far as the discussion of what is a Corse or not a Corse-I think we have beat this horse. A discussion of what and what is not a Corse should be in the general section. Someone can start a thread there and perhaps the forum members can reach an agreement- or we can agree to disagree.

I would like to pull the discussion back to the bike that Scott posted and talk about what is shown in the pictures. In the future, if we can just talk about what parts are on the bike and-- and not try to put a label on the bike- -the conversation can stay neutral in tone.

Look- everyone who loves these bikes are passionate and have strong opinions. Lets us try to be a bit dispassionate when someone puts a bike into the gallery. The Gallery is there to provide a place to see what makes the Corse bikes different then the road bikes.
