The fact that certain items may not be period correct do not turn a Corse machine into a road bike .....

Hi Tom-
I hope you have cooled off a bit. I have known John and his son for many many years and I agree --he knows about everything you can know about these bikes. But in your haste to defend him you feel the need to insult everyone else that also has knowledge about these bikes. I am not sure who you were pointing a finger at when you said the above but I was hoping this section of the forum would not be used to berate people you do not know -or what they know.
I agree with Jasper that each bike has a history that dictates what we see on the bike in it current form. I felt this would be what would make the Corse section interesting--- civil discussion among members.
I always assumed that current Corse's (restored or not) will often have a mix of period correct parts, (factory and non factory), and parts that may not be period correct but at least allows the bike to be in running condition. As we have seen-- many bikes were modified throughout their lifetime to win races or just to keep them competitive - often using non factory parts for a variety of reasons. All of them are unique and valuable.
I am sure many bikes that will be put in the Gallery did not start out as factory Customer or Works bikes- they were assembled. Without the history most will assume they are looking at a bike that came from the factory and judge it based upon that premise.
This is why in my original statements about this section I emphasized that each bike needs to be presented along with its HISTORY. The purpose of the "Gallery" was to present pictures (period and current) of Corse bikes and to provide a history if it is known----and to point out the parts that are not original factory Corse parts so no forum member gets false information about what actually came originally on FACTORY bikes. This is not meant to DEGRADE any bike that does not have factory original parts- because it may never had them-- but to educate. It may actually be as "original" as it always was--just not " factory original".
In short--the "Gallery" is intended to be used as a Reference guide.
So ----when a forum member puts a picture in the gallery without history you can be sure a number of members will point out what they think is "wrong" with the bike---this is more common then pointing out what is "factory correct" about the bike. Perhaps we should start each discussion with what we think is "factory correct"l before pointing out what is not original. Or we should first put pictures in the general discussion area and when the discussion is over I will move the core sections of the discussion to the Gallery.
I am trying to let the discussions run their course but would appreciate no insults against other members -
