Magnesium - project update

Some parts arrived today. Wonderful what they're doing in India these days. I firstly measured to ensure they would fit, then applied a 2 part etch primer suitable for magnesium - it's rather thin, so did a little 2 pak clear over the top to protect.

So how much weight did the coat of paint lose and couldn't you find/match the correct Green and Yellow? 😉

The etch primer seems to find its own colour. Has worked OK since I first did it on Campagnolos in 1978. Insert quizzical face. Weight? Who cares???

For a good match to the original green used on the mag' Corse parts, Aircraft Spruce green zinc chromate looks spot on, Volvo Penta also use a similar paint on their bus+truck gearboxes, it's good enough to fool a lot of knowledgeable people.

That spec specifies alumin(i)um and steel. My paint guy tells me the one he sells me for magnesium is different to the ally one. Or maybe the prick just wants to charge me more .........

You could put it on top of what you have to get a more "correct" color.

I guess I could, but my main aim is protection of the surface, plus it has a nice translucent look whereby you can see the magnesium underneath. Yes, I'm a rebel. (insert rebellious face).

The look of the outside is trivial to what will happen on the "inside" of that magnesium waterpump cover. Do a search and find Steve's (MrR) take on what to do on the inside!

I saw that! I'm very wary of magnesium. I have a set of "new" Marvics that I got from Gowie 5 years ago and they are unused but an inspection yesterday revealed some chips in the paint so I'm having them stripped and I shall give them the business. I think people who powdercoat mag are asking for trouble.

And yes, I used to "watercool" my Campas from time to time. (insert look of someone in their twenties who wasn't afraid to ride in the rain)

+1 , We only get to borrow magnesium from Mother Nature for a short while. Then we have to give it back.

Powder coating on Mag. is bad on several levels IMHO.

Indeed. Titanium, on the other hand ....

Do you know how much it costs to replace all the fasteners on a Ducati with Titanium ones? Yes, you probably do. All to save a kilo.

And isn't it nice to machine. I especially like the way it catches fire.
