Oy...pinning down 20 year old serious race bikes is not for the faint of heart (or ignorant), they are moving targets. Very interesting thread. Attached is a race recap video of Falappa racing "a" for sure 1990 bike at Mosport, the one time I got to see him, and I distinctly remember being very impressed. Wonder what happened to that bike?

Great video! It's nice to see Jamie James on a Ducati. He lives just outside of Asheville, was at the USDesmo trackday at Roebling Rd. last week.

Jamie James is such a gentleman. I was rooting for him that day, and Adamo of course. Apparently there are a number of those recap videos from that era on you-tube. I have Mark's bike in my data base and that is what I meant by the frame numbers of the LR were not the same as the 851 and 888 sequence numbers. I would like to have a few more examples of the LR frame numbers to be sure all the LR frame numbers were like this.

Boy I know that the new WSB's are much faster but when I see these old video's with the Ducati rider's front wheel going up at almost any point on the track I find myself totally into the race. Very cool to see Mosport -which is a track I have ridden many times, just dominated by those three great riders.

Just reviewed the '92 season video and see that Polen and Fallappa still had POLICE on the side of their bikes for the last four races.

Looks like the Decal is correct on this bike.

It may have had 'POLICE' during the last four races and therefore 'POLICE' decals are correct............

but Phil911 is right that 'VOGART' decals appeared during 1992.

I have been trying to date my images and have found that these were taken during round 5 at Jarama in 1992.

Here are the forks from Doug Polens 1992 bike #1 (DP921). The chassis number of the bike is ZDM888S*001351*. This bike is in the Ducati Museum and is now incorrectly stickered and labeled as a 1991 Polen bike. Alan Cathcart tested this bike his #2 1992 bike in 1993

Here are the forks from Doug Polens 1992 Bike #2 (DP922). The chassis number of the bike is ZDM888S*001350* (one digit away from bike #1). This bike is in the Ducati Museum and is now incorrectly stickered and labeled as a 1993 Falappa bike. Both of these 1992 Polen bikes originally had Team Police sponsorship/stickers.

The bike that is being auctioned as a supposed 1990 Falappa works bike has a chassis tag that is completely different from the two 1992 Polen factory bikes. It also doesn't have the large aluminum preload adjuster knobs that the 1992 factory bikes had on the top of the Ohlins forks. The chassis number is also way too low to be a 1992 bike.

The bike looks like a standard 1991/2 customer 888 Corsa that has been stickered up to look like a 1992 Falappa bike.

The only thing that leads me to believe that it may have some Works parts on it is that it has the 6 pin diagnostic connector on the left side fairing stay so the factory team could communicate with the injection ECU

The chassis number tags on the 1990 and 1991 Works are completely different than those used on the supposed 1990 Works Falappa bike being auctioned.

They are almost square in shape and are riveted to either the left or right front Dzus retaining spring for the tailsection. they are flat under the rivets and then curve around the frame tube. They also have a different numbering system than the standard VIN used on a streetbike or 1992 and later Works bike. They have the year followed by the bike number.

Here is the tag from Roches 1990 Bike #1 (DM901). If you look at any of the period photos of Roches, Falappas or Polens 1990/91 Works WSB bikes you will see this type of tag. Paolo Contis 851/888/916 book is a good source.

Here is a shot of Falappas 1992 Works bike. Notice the large aluminum preload adjuster knobs on the front forks as opposed to the blue nuts on the auction bike. It does however have the same 6-pin diagnostic connector on the left side fairing bracket as the auction bike.

I photographed these in Italy in 2008. I wasn't much interested in non-bevels at the time, but this 888 is probably of significance. And yes, they're all real.

Well it looks like someone at RM Auctions must have asked the seller for proof of its history and they had none. Now the bike is just listed as "1992 Ducati SBK 888 Corsa"

No mention of "Factory Works bike or Giancarlo Falappa anywhere.

The bike in Tony's pics is a completely diff bike to the other - 'SP' type ohlins/discs and early type dash - is it the real deal ie - Roche's bike - the one mentioned in Foggy 888 post?. Obviously this guy has more than one corse!

engine: 888W4 star 000825 star
I am curious to know what it really is: one of the 20 production racers made for the 1990 season on basis of the sp2 or an sp2 converted into a racer?
