I was very fortunate- I seemed to love machines before they got popular with the very rich-of course I did not know 356's would become so popular- I just loved them from the first time I saw one when I was 12. The Dino was an exception-- when I first got it I used to be stopped by the police all of the time who thought I must have stole it since I did not "look" like I should own it. On the other hand many people would stop me at a light and tell me how good of a job I did on my kit car. At the time the Kelmark GT was the very poor looking Dino copy and because of my long hair and T shirt they felt it had to be a kit car I was driving.

I agree with you Hauge about these cars now being out of your budget- today they are out of mine. I have been fortunate because even though I was not making a lot of money the cost of living was much lower in the '70's- 80's when I was buying and restoring 356's. I could rent a house for very little and what money I did have went farther. If I was starting out today I am not sure I could afford to buy the future Icons I would be drawn to. But I know I would buy something to work on because it is in my nature-- I would not have as many or the diversity of machines I have now. I can see 851/88's and perhaps some old trucks.

In the end --this passion with rebuilding machines helped me to learn many skills, helped do my day job better, and allowed me to meet many very accomplished people (like Marvin) who share the same passions. I join forums but do not talk much on them-- I sort of like to lurk and see what cool projects other lover's of machines are working on.

There's a GTO shell in the underground carpark next to where I take the daughter to Ballet. Yes I know all very butch, and funny as none of the women talk about bikes. They seem to talk about child birth and shopping as far as I can tell.
Does the Dino have bits of square section just welded on to places with a bit of square plate on the end constitute a mount? Looked like serious arm scratching stuff to me.

The main frame is oval tubing-- the rest is square tubing that acts as perimeters around the main body structure. I have many pictures of striped down Dino's if you want.

Pictures of bare chassis tubes or the skeleton before the panels are hung/wrapped onto are always cool and interesting looking....please post that PORN Mark! 😁

OK- For some reason my frame shots with the body off are corrupted and I cannot attach them -- but I do have a bunch with the body still on the frame but all of the fiber glass is removed so you can see the frame--Most Dino restorations only go this far. The body has to be pretty bad to remove it- but I did have a bunch of pictures of one such car

Thanks Mark, it's nice to see how particular cars are made up, it makes them look not as complicated.

During 1991, I enrolled on a two year Full-time Diploma course on vehicle retoration, it covered all aspects, machine shop, mechanics, paint, bodywork, electrics, upholstery, theory and basic business studies. As students we were introduced to all aspects that we could possibly encounter, it did not make us experts but gave us an insight in how to repair and a foundation to start gaining experience for the skills needed...anyway. The highlight of the course was that at the end we embarked on a ten day trip visiting European vehicle museums and specialist retoration companies.

The highlight for me was the Rosso Bianco collection in Germany, where we were also shown the workshop and storage areas, KCA a Milanese Lancia specialist where we were taken to their bodyshop facility which was away from their main workshops, Mercedes factory and museum in Stuttgart and finally the Moto Guzzi factory and museum. It was great going to places seeing basic materials pounded, stretched, manipulated and transformed into objects of beauty and desire.

I saw so may Porsche 904 models that I actually thought they were common. We aslo visited the French National Car Museum, formerly the Schlumpf Collection which had an interesting story as to how it began and a tale and lesson in alleged accounting practises that possible should not be tried! 😁

I love seeing a pile of parts turned into something and I suppose I am in a fortunate position now to be able to make parts and help others make things of beauty and fun with added adrenelin. 😄

I agree!!!!! Time and money. Of course your plan could be to sell a few as they are and to use that money to restore the ones you truly love.

its the result of 20 years of collecting 😁 in the mid 90ties i´ve specialised to the italian cars and reduced my fleet.

All of the GTS (spider-removable top) had them from the start. The GT has a quarter window.

Ok-

Put on a few more parts. The air conveyor is for a '94 so that will not be used but I put it on to see how it will look at that point. I am trying to find the correct air conveyor so I can send it to Peter for a mold. Mine is fully covered in fiberglass since it was cracked up so bad- usable but not the best example.

Also got some input for a battery box from Terry and Guy so I am keeping my fingers crossed.

I am repairing the wiring harness -- found the correct connectors and trying to find old stock Raychem heat shrink tubing so it has the printing on it.

Rebuilt the front Ohlins at Ricks and see that there is Polen written in white paint on one of the axle castings-- kind of cool. Also the #1 on the rear light base is also interesting.

Will not make much progress in the next few weeks-- going to the track for a three day event- this will be the 10th year that a bunch of us got tired of organized track days and rented a track- limit 50 riders. It is called SSR Showup, Shutup & RIDE!!! I miss the last couple of years due to moving to NC so I will see if I can still ride. Marvin and the guys from NC are going out for it.
