I have seen that American spec engines seem to have a completely different numbering sytem for their engines when compared to the european market.
European engines have ZDM to start with but US engines have things like
SB8S ####
SB9S ####
Were these SP's that went Stateside ZDM numbered or the US digit style?
spike
yes peter the 2 missing sp3s engines are in the european format ie zdm888w4 ****** if my sources are right ( and i have no reason to doubt them ) the 2 missing sp3s engines should be around the 500 mark , no exact numbers as the chap i deal with could loose his position if there was even a hint he was divulging such info , but he does owe me so like i say pm me again and i can see what more i can tell you
Mr.R
It must have been a good holiday, what have you two been smoking?
Isn't it bad enough that there's fake SP's out there without fake mythical/phantom models.

look steve i,m only saying what i,ve been told by a very reliable source and i have no need to doubt it , if these 2 engines were found then who knows there value not only in money but motorcycle history !!

The winter, does weird shit to you guys hey. Is it the isolation from being enclosed in dark hidden rooms, fending of the bleak despair of winter. Or just that you drink more. Anyone considered signing up for the next Mars psych test for long duration space flight?
spike

Wasn't Japanese buyers and their quest for race replicas responsible Ducati producing the SP range in the first place?
It could be Spike that they produced pre-production SP3S's to try and gauge feedback in Japan, prior to the official release a year later of the SP4S.

could be pete but i favour my information that the japanese were involved in the development and when the engines turned out to well out perfom there own machines of the day they were ordered to scrap them all by the then emporer so as to maintain the japanese economy , imagine everyone who worked for the japanese major 4 motorcycle manufacturers out of work because joe bloggs wanted a lighter faster better handling bike , these bikes must been awsome bits of kit .
Mr.R
Surely you meant to say you haven't "obtained" any alcohol so far this year Peter? 😉
Griff,
Living in the Suffolk or the Yorkshire does funny things to folk, (We're talking 'Bumpkins' here!) most of the time the inhabitants don't need the help of recreational pharmaceuticals. 😯
Whilst we're looking for the missing SP(3)S's perhaps we can also look for Puff the Magic Dragon?
I heard that he lived by the sea?? But that's only what Peter, Paul and Mary told me...
You'll have noticed that I haven't a problem divulging my sources.
"Little" Jacky Paper could also confirm this but he doesn't want to be thought of as a "Grass"...

well mr r all i,m trying to do is pass on the information i have , i feel that the more we know about the sp3s the better as it could be a major link missing in the ducati chain , imagine a motorcycle in them days that could way outperfom a 1098r .... yeah thats what were talkin about ,

given that ducati production for the new year starts in september sp4s could have been made in 1991. not 1991 models, but made in 1991.

I wouldn't be wanting one of the first few off the production line after the August break.
mikesps
Yes, I would give the first hundred or so a miss, to be safe.😄

😁
Yeah Mike, the first 100 were right duds! 😁

many of the 2001 996 we got were 8/00 build. so people would order the wrong parts for crash repairs, etc, because that's when they went from green to silver engine covers, etc.
