the SP2 - SP4 were all 888 when the base models were 851, so their engine numbers starting with ZDM888W4 were unique to SP only. when the SP5 came in 1993 there was a base model 888, but the base model was ZDM888W4B, thus distinguishing it from the SP range. Not sure if the SP5 had a W4 or W4C as it was a different spec motor. any SP5 owners?

so all sp,s from 2 > 5 were w4 but the sp1 was on standard numbers and the cases must have just been pulled off the line !! so unless you have an original from the factory sp1 the only way you could check a random 851 engine is to mail ducati !!

I think that is about it Spike. You didn't even get a plaque on an SP1. Or should I say I've yet to see an SP1 with a plaque - I think making any firm statements regarding SP1s is asking for trouble.
I had another afternoon on the bike and I'm nearly done with the spanners. The electrics got me though 😄. Lights, horn, cranking and all that old stuff works fine but nothing from the ECU. If I jump the relays the pump comes on with one and I'm guessing the coils on the other but the ECU doesn't seem interested in switching anything on itself.
I've got my wiring diagram and a magnifying glass in fromt of me so I'll work though the ECU connections and see what I find. I established an earth at pin 1 & 19 but that is as far as I've got before I came in from the workshop.
BTW I have the red warning triangle up on the console. I don't suppose this is trying to tell me anything useful.
Andy 😳

That red triangle may b the sidestand/down warning light.

Your sidestand is down Andy 😁

Yours was the better post! 😁

Thanks chaps.
You know I looked at that when putting her back together and it looked as if the switch was stuck in so I guessed it was OK. Obviously not. That could explain why it wasn't connected when I got the bike.
Back in a bit I'm off down to the workshop to disconnect a switch 😁
----------------------------
The warning triangle has gone so I don't have to look at that and wonder any more but the hoped for click of relays was not forthcoming. She's still dead up the rear end

Why are Italian wiring diagrams so small? Still I think I've got it. Power comes via the kill switch to the first relay that energises the ECU, injectors and the second relay which then energizies the ignition system and fuel pump. Somebody shout if I've lost the plot. So first port of call has to be to check the kill switch. In my mind they are a device for earthing a magneto. I must update my brain into seeing them as a big on/off switch.

Ignition sequence started, we have blast off. Of all the connectors on the bike that could have come apart it was the one that lives under the ECU. On the bright side I now know that all the others are nicely cleaned, tightened and making good contact.
It's pretty loud on the standard straight through cans 😄

Nice one Andy , Must be a bit of a relief to get it fired up 😄
andypocock
Too right Paul. You never know if you are going to be there for an hour or a month with a wiring problem.

I'm done rebuilding. It's MOT time now and then I get to play 😄

very nice !!!

nice looking bike and really quick job...enjoy. 😁

Spot on Andy , A really nice Job and one of the few UK 1989 Strada,s that actually is an SP1 (nearly 😁 ) Looking at that I,m tempted to rush out and re fit my M1R,s and find some low level cans 😄

BLOODY LOVELY......................thats all i can say at this point in time............i have had a few pints, it just makes me come over all emotional...........well done mate, 'so much in so little time'..............isnt that a Churchill quote?

Thanks chaps. She's been great fun to work on and I'm really glad I was able to save her from being broken. Now I can have some gentle fun tinkering until I get her running and handling just right.
First off I have to see what the MOT tester makes of the very loud cans 😯

Man that was fast. Looks great, just like mine except for the wheel and subframe colours.
Good to see the original mirrors too.
