Here is the dilema...

...is it worth more as an SP3 or a genuine SP1, which way do you go? 😉

Perhaps you need to buy yourself a bog standard 851 so that you can build up an SP3 and an SP1! 😁

Is it an SP1 with the wrong frame or an SP3 with the wrong engine and forks? 😳

As it's the frame that carries the ID it's offically the later I suppose but you only have to look at it to see that it is really the former.

Still what does it matter? It's keeping me amused. One day I might find somebody with a blown up SP1 who wants an engine in which case they can buy mine and I'll fit a 916 lump 😁

Should have my nice white frame back tomorrow so I can start putting her back together 😄

that date fits in with the info i have on mine i stated that yours pre-dated mine by about 50 units and mine was registed on 01.08.91 , 10 or so a month ??

Theory: Spike's bike was registered about 5 months after mine was built. However it might have been built the following week.

shoot me if i,m wrong but i was always lead to believe the 888 sp series had the W4 after the number , for example ZDM 888 W4 , so i presumed that seing as though the sp1 was the only sp still to have the 851 capacity if it was ZDM 851 W4 it was an sp1

my sp 3 does,nt have the B but i thought the sp1 had the 851 and the b ? if andy has had his verified he,s the one to ask i think .... come on andy does it have a B 😄

Wasn't the SP1 nothing more than a 851 with straight through cans and no air box lid ? supplied for an Italian production race series ? so may not have an engine number prefix to single it out from all the other 851 Stradas . I only have a couple of books on the 8 series bikes and the SP1 only gets a paragraph at most in each 😳

the sp1 had quite a few diferences to the 89 strada , valve sizes and valve timing , the usual oil cooler but did still run marzoc front and rear , ohlins dint come in till the sp2 . i was also lead to beleive that these motors were hand built as opposed to the later . they did however still run the single injectors , no twins till 90

My engine number is ZDM851W4B*00???* whether that tells you it's an SP1 or whether only Ducati can by checking their records I don't know.

And there is the C stamped by the plug hole. Again I don't know if this is significant.

i ran this one ages ago , mine has stamps on the head aswell but nobody seems to know what they mean ??

The stamps show how much modification has been done to the head by the factory. Brad has an explanation of the C, C1 and C2 stamps here ...

but mine are stamped A2 ?? was A used for the later 888 engines , mines an sp3

C2 Denotes no modification is possible as the heads have been modified allready .

So C2 heads would be the ones to have on the 851 .
