Jasper
what book is that from?
Mr.R
Hi Jasper,
I've got got the book that those pic's came from and better still (for me!) I sat on that actual bike when the factory brought them over for some University lectures in the UK, a friend who's a Uni' lecturer got me and a few DOCGB members on the guest list at Plymouth Uni'...
We asked more questions than the students and between us had 'possibly'??
More knowledge on the subject than the Ducati factory official.
He was I think the WSB Race team manager?
One of the highlights of that day for me was when the guy from Ducati explained why the Aprilla Mille design was basically soooo inferiour to the 90 degree Ducati L twins. 😁

Funny you mention this Steve, because I remember back in '98 at Laguna Seca in the pits talking to someone about the 'new' Aprilia RSV Mille 60 degree engine compared to the Ducati 90 degree. He swore that the Ducati engine design was more 'balanced' and 'durable' than what Aprilia had to offer for the future. Davide Tardozzi I think was his name?
Mr.R
Hi again all,
Many, many years back now I attended the Paris Bike show and Roche's championship winning bike was on display, I took photo's in B/W from all angles.
Some years later I had the pleasure of giving these pic's to a good friend in the DOCGB who'd just bought a SP3 at a bargain price...
He used the pic's to have all of the correct sponsers decals made and placed them in the right places.
Fast forward a couple of years and I'd been given the honour of being the Best Bike judge at a DOCGB event, the club President offered to help me, when we got to Alan's SP3 Gaz said to me "Wow Steve that's as near as you can get to actually seeing Raymond Roche's bike".
We awarded the trophy to Alan Long for his homage to the Great Frenchman.
This really pissed off the 916 etc crowd as they thought the bike a dinosaur!
Ripper,
The guy we spoke with was from before Tardozzi's era, one of the points that he made was that with the 60 degree design the motor was already out to it's maximum bore size with no room to increase this, so Aprilla couldn't increase the bore and shorten the stroke in the way that Ducati did on the later WSB bikes.
They'd 'Hog tied' themselves too early in the game...
Ooooops!
History later went on to prove his point, whilst the Mille's went quite well at 1st they were later out paced by the Ducati's.
I wonder if Aprilla have learnt the lesson from this with their new V4???

This and its SP3 roadgoing twin is probably the pinnacle of modern the ducati.
May I have this picture in high definition ?
Many Thanks

SP4 - All the way
For all those SP4 lovers, this is my baby. I've got it exactly how I want it. Wasn't cheap, but worth every penny.

Here's it from a German Ducati book ...

Hi all, well now just about all the salt mountains have been disolved and swept up by the councils and spring is here with dry reasonably quiet roads, the 2.5 mile straight which runs along side of where i live echos the glorious sound of howling 4.s, twins and strokers being given a good thrashing which is a great sound to all us petrol heads here. be careful out there at least there's no caravans yets, anyway, here my contribution to that wonderful noise and this thread.! cheers

Thank you for all the replies Guys.
I reckon most of you are `in love` with the SP3?😳
At least, most of you like those old decals and black wheels....
Keep poisting your favourite 851/888, please!😄

My 851 kit with his big brother.😄
BARONROJO
I simply LOVE the SP3 and the SP4.....
Yes, the SP4 is reeeeeally sexy and very nicely stiled and I'd own one without any doubt, but.....
but the rawness in the fatty style of the SP3 involves a kind of the purest ducati magic.
I love them both, I own none of them, though!!! 😡
(But I'll get one to become friends with my F1!!!!
sp2 boy
Welcome to the forum baronrojo, if you cannot afford an SP just get a standard model and fit the single seat unit too replicate whichever look. You could even get two sets of bodywork painted to replicate the SP3 and SP4 bikes, swapping between them when you want and confuse your neighbours who would think that you have two 851/888.
I like the Ducati F1, post a picture of your bike! 😄
BARONROJO
First of all, thank you for your warm welcome, SP2 boy!!! I've been around wandering for a while but I'm not really an active member of this forum as far as I'm not STILL the owner of an 851/888 SP (?).
Luckily enough, I can afford an SP (unluckily not that SPS on sale around) but it's more a familiar problem than an economical one (Sure you undertand) I'm also the owner of an '88 Paso in close to mint condition and a FANTACTIC (but yes, ugly) Multistrada 1000 that rolls really like thunder!

Nice bike, proud owner!

Better view of the beauty.

Nice F1...I have a confession, I quite like the Paso!!

Marchesini mags. (All the OEM stuff is carefully preserved) 130 Rwh - It`s fast
enough for me!

SP3 or SP4 I reckon, not keen on SP5 graphics. SP4S pics below:

Sorci851
For me it's the SP4: minimal graphics, white frame, black wheels give the appearance of depth and hide dust, and road grime - basically it has a "strictly business" appearance; what's there is only for the purpose of performance.
