I must say that all of you have been very supportive during this winter, it really helps to keep the project going. What makes me feel like an amateur is that it's hard to avoid comparing the finish with what I see on this forum, what the rest of you make looks awesome, (at least what is published..). As a street bike the bike now looks as a std 94 Strada in good condition. As a trackbike it looks like I has alreday fallen, that would be the first time before entering the track. The fairings are terrible and there is no time to fix it before the season begins.
The bike goes to the Dyno next week, this will give the answer if the exhausts and air-box are any good. I will let you know how it goes.

Summing up

The Bike is now as finished as it will be before I start using it. It was at the Dyno last week. Result was around 10 BHP more than the reference S4RS with Termi slip on and DP ECU, except for the very peak where I have 18 BHP more than the reference. It seems like the cat takes a lot of power on a std bike. I'm quite pleased with the result since the engine has never been opened. With cam timing and some more fine tuning it should be possible to get more.

Summing up what was made wrong and right in this project:
Made wrong:
Making the exhaust in 1,5 mm thick pipes. It was a pain to grind it down to the same weight as the original downpipes. Making the exhaust was the most time consuming part, it took so long that it was not fun in the end.
Thinking that the glass fibre fairings would fit the bike out of the crate. This now forces me to use the bike without even having painted it. The whole idea with a classic is lost as it looks right now. When things are as they should people think that it's time for the classic parade when entering the track, easy to live up to. As it is right now it looks as a trashers bike.
Biggest mistake was not to check if it is possible to fit a 1098 engine. It would definitely need some extra job to fit the bearings for the swing arm, but I haven't even checked how that could be done or if it fits in the frame.
Made right:
I'm really pleased with the choice of ECU. It's so understandable that even I can understand what is going on this being my first injected bike
With the standard fairings it will be a sleeper
Exhaust seem to work OK giving the Dyno result
Doing it

During eastern the bike will be tested properly at Magny Cours, so I guess I can call this the end of this project. There is a lot more to do but that will be another story.

I'd like to be the 1st to say "Well done that man!"
I realise that it's been a lot of hard work, but 130 rwbhp from basically a motor swap and exhaust system seems almost like cheating to me. 😉
I'm sloooowly putting together a 984cc old school Desmoquatro motor for my '92 Strada and I'd be over the moon if I get 130 rwbhp.
All this reminds me of a good mate who owns a 888SP(4)S with a Corse spec 926cc motor, one evening at the local DOCGB meeting another mate turned up on a then new Aprilla Mille which had similar power to Johnny G's 926 which had cost Johnny a fortune to have built/tuned by JHP's.
He looked at me, rolled his eyes and said "Steve that's almost bloody cheating that is!"
Once again well done I bet that you're pleased.

Which TB's did you use? I picked up a set of 54mm Showers from a 749 and hope to be able to use them.
As a side note Steve, I had all the parts to make up a 955 using ST4 cases, etc. Decided it was a waste of time as for less money I picked up a S4RS engine and sold all of the 955 parts.

Nice to see it on wheels again. A nice paint job would of cuorse be nice but now you can sort every thing out.
I still have to ride my standard engine. I´m waiting for the crank. I guess it will take some time before I sorted everytingöut with the mix of 888/996 engine with the old wiring loom.

It's the standard TB's. I moulded the airbox from the S4R together with the original then I changed the airducts to 40mm from an industrial vacuum cleaner (some of you will kill me for that, the vacuum cleaner is not even italian). It works, there is no gain from taking the lid of the air box. The guy that helped out with the Dyno and mapping says the 999s with 54mm and showers normally gives 3-4 more BHP. But you have done some internal modifications as well so I guess you could expect more.
And Steve, I agree it's sheating but I dont think I'm capable of doing it your way.

Could you measure the S4R's tb's ? I just picked up some S4 tb's and was disappointed to find out they were 46mm just like the 851.

Intake side is 50mm, outlet side is 46mm. The S4RS TB's have the 12 hole injectors though, don't know about the S4R's?

Not to worry, plenty for your proposed engine either way!

More cheating

Hi,

Something went wrong with the first mapping. For some reason the vertical cylinder did not get mapped properly. During the first use of the bike I used the horizontal map on both cylinders. The map was also giving an on-off respond at small throttle openings. So, to cure this the bike went to the Dyno again last saturday. Then on the sunday I had the opportunity to go more than 200 km on track. Now it really goes fine with a lot of controlable power. The engine wants to continue to high revs but I have the injectors cutting at 10400 and the ignition cutting at 10500. It's tempting to go higher but I want the engine to last.
Now its only 4 RWBHP down compared to a standard 1098 in the same Dyno!
Reference curve is S4RS as last time.

Yes Steve, it's cheating!

I doubt that I can match 138 rwhp with a desmoqattro, even if its taken out to 1026.
And with all facts i think I could have bought a testastretta for far less money than my project has costed me so far......
But it will surtenly be interesting.
It actually started over a couple of beers where I said to a friend:
I bet a nice bottle of grappa that I can get at least 120 rwhp on my 888 with a 984 and etanol conversion...................

Not knowing how Biscayas dyno are compaired to other dynos it is difficult to know but after all I think that you might be get more then Henrik is getting.

Afaik Henriks engine is a standard S4-Rs and that is a standard 998s engine. He has done a custom airbox and exhaust that looks superior to the stock parts.

You are building a 1026 with heads, cylinder and pistons form Erik. The engine will also be a running on Grappa. 😄

Erik knows how to do good stuff. Just look at TomToms 996😄 How the Grappa in the tank will effect the engine we have to wait and see.

What airbox and exhaust are you planning to run?

What did you do to the case? Only paint or something more?

Shame that you did not build your engine two years ago. I wanted a standard gearbox in my 984 S4 but could not find any so I had to stay with the CR gearbox. I think they suck but I guess that it might be different if you do a lot of track riding.

And oh yes. I went for a bit of a tuning blast with my 851/996SPS today. This is a serous upgrad 😄
