P8 ECU in an 851

I replaced the P7 ECU in my 851SP3 with a P8.

Plug and Play, but you do need the P8 EFI software on the eprom.
The bin-files for 888's are readily available and contain the software as well as the fuel and ignition tables (and more).

Just be sure to use a 888 bin file for a single injector per cilinder 888, so not the one of an SP5.

I copied my 851SP3 P7 fuel and ingnition tables in the eprom of an 888SP5, bike runs really fine with the P8 ECU and new eprom.

Right now I am rebuilding my house, so am not able to help you out. I understand Mike can help you with the P8 eprom. If the eprom in your 851 is an OEM one, than you can probably find the bin file on the internet, so you won't need to send Mike your eprom?

I'm assuming that the new P8 I bought (haven't received it yet however) will have the 888 eprom, but how do I know if it's the single or dual injector version?

You'll only know if the EPROM is labelled as such, with one of the following codes. There are a few other codes, so just post what you have when you get it. Thinking about it, I rebuilt a poorly 851 a few years ago that had a piston failure. It was previously running 888 aftermarket cylinders and pistons, and a 888 FBF P7 EPROM. I downgraded it back to 851cc, and left it running on the EPROM rated for 888 - it ran fine, albeit with a little popping on the overrun, most likely due to it being slightly rich.

Single Injector:
* 888 Strada/SPO = 038 or 039
* 916 Strada = 053/054/055

Dual Injector:
* 888SP5= 040
* 916SP = 056/057/058

OK gang, I received the new P8 ECU, and the sticker indicates it's for a 916 Strada. I assume it won't work as-is in my 851, so I'll need one of two things; either an eprom compatible with the P8 that has the 851 file burned to it, or a 888 strada eprom for the P8. Of course neither would take advantage of the P8's additional functionality.

It seems upgrading to the P8 was desirable, so I have to imagine someone did some custom mapping for an 851 to utilize its full functionality, particularly the individual cylinder mapping. I realize no two bikes are alike, but I would think you could get pretty close on a stock bike. With the P8 properly tuned to the 851, I've read that the engine performance is greatly improved. The question is, how do I get hold of a P8 compatible chip with the 851 image, or better yet, a custom mapping taking advantage of the P8's capabilities? Someone had to do this at some point.

The chances of getting a chip that's perfect out of the box are as slim as winning a National Lottery.
...and certainly one that has individual maps per cylinder.
To get the best from a P8 for your bike you'd need to get it on the dyno with someone who knows what they're doing.
There is NO one size fits all off the shelf chip.

To close off this conversation, I've created two chips here -

1. the 851 (035) fuel map transplanted into a 888 Strada chip (038);
2. The 888 Strada (038) chip with a 4.2% reduction across the range (in ratio with the 851/888 engine capacity).

I've checked that both will work, and they are now on their way to Seadweller, who can test both and select whichever one he feels is the better of the two.

Now here's the thing Seadweller's 851 is a '91 model that came with 32/28 valves (with the prone to breaking thinner 1.5mm valve colletts), the later '92 851's and 888's came with the updated combustion chamber shape, bigger (SP2, 3 and 4) 33/29 size valves and thicker 1.75mm valve colletts.

Yeah, Raquel (my wife named her) is fully pickled and tucked away in my office. I plan to take her out in the wild perhaps this winter up in the Tennessee and North Carolina mountains. Riding a bike around my area is a death-wish. I've been hit 3 times, and that was the end of that.

I'll have to wait until then to try the chips. I'm collecting some hard-to-get parts as don't know that I'll ever sell this bike. I mistakenly gave one up, and searched for 6 years to find this one. Getting ready to put her back together. I have two set of fairings, one my wife suggested be mounted on the wall. Yeah, I'm a luck guy!
