Back on track!
This weeken Iยดve started to assemble the new 1026 engine. I got another st4s case, new bearings (again..) and a new gear box.
Since last time I also invested in an owen.....
Bearing and beer in the fridge...
I spend some time shimming the crank and gearbox. Case is now put together and I hope by the weekend the engine will be asembeled again.

Hi Thomas,
What are the baked beans for, the ones in the ice box with the cooled bearings? ๐
Does this motor start on the button, or is it a bump start or starter rollers job?

No beans, wurst!
Now when I have an owen I might as well have some food in there :-)
The 1026 engine is getting more stanard than I first wanted. This is because I now have my 748R for track days.
From start I wantet to get it as light as possible but now I will settle with a lot of standard parts to keep it simple. It will problaby still make a few people at the track surpised.
The recepy for now is:
ST4S case with ST2 crank and complete leftside (single phase), 996 heads with 748R cams (mildly ported), Pistal hc pistons, Carillo rods. new old stock 888 gearbox, 748 R throttle bodies and nemesis ecu. And of cuorse, electrical start.
The 748R is quite a good track day bike and parts so much easier to get thet I will problably build a hotter engine for that next winterto keep up with 10-1198-99...

I've knocked on wood and have my fingers crossed.... Here's hoping you've got the gremlins out this time. Glad to see and hear you've got your project going again.
Good luck! Here's to more than 5 laps. ๐ None of us want to see any pics of broken bits.

Getting closer.
I got the new lever for the quick shift to the 748 sรฅ I did that first.
I still got some spare time for the 1026 project.
I did a quick spray on the covers, they are not as dark as they look on the pictures but they should have beeb brighter.

Hi Thomas,
I've used a "Snap On" adjustable ring compressor for well over 12 years on the Desmoquatro motors and it works a treat, as it does on most motors that I use it on...

Stamp collection?
Some projects are not supposed to be straight forward.
Last week I tried to start her up. The battery was not tiptop but it fired but then there was not enought juice in the battery (I thought) to get it running.
After varius attempt with batterys, jumper cables, etc. I thought the starter motor was gone. I replaced it with another one with the same result, the enginge would not turn.
After fixing and thinking, I first thought that there was some problem with the engine turning way to heavy. It turned out the the sprocket beteween the sparg and the starer motor had siezed on the shaft!
It was a pain in to get out the shaft from the case but after replacing the engine started emidiatly...
Just to find out that I for some idiotic reason had mounted the head gasket the wrong way (blocks the oil return and fills the cooling system with oil).
Collecting new gaskets tomorow.
Hopefully I can have it back together this week. Track day on friday.
What could possible go wrong! ๐

I don't think this engine likes you.

Brought the bike toe 30th aniversary 2 weeks ago.
Still needs some fine tuning (map) and some other details.
Any year now...

Hi Thomas,
I'm not keen on the Candy Apple red on the 1026, but both bikes look great chap.
Are they White Power front forks on the "Big Un"?...and does the 1026cc motor start on the button/using the standard 888 starter motor?

Hello Steve!
I believe the st4s starter motor is ca. 5-10mm longer than the erlier 888 starter motors. Noy sure if there is more power though. The later engines have different starter gearing also.
Starts on the button with quite small battery
Fork is WP Roma/Rota

Hi Thomas, I think the candy apple red looks fabulous with those gold rims, when I scrolled down the page and got to the standard 888 I thought " boring" compared to the 1026 look - nice job. That said I think that a white frame ,black wheeled 851 or 888 is a hard bike to beat looks wise.
Good luck at the track !!

mmmmmm, candy.

I kind of like the CA Red! That's always been my favorite color. I even painted my alarm clock CA Red when I was a kid, my 31 Chevy hot rod too. I don't know if I would dare paint a nice 851/888 though. However I am building up a wrecked '04 S4R Monster and always liked the metallic blue with white Dan Guerny racing stripes, white wheels so I'm painting mine similarly but using black cherry candy (Candy Brandywine over a charcoal pearl) (Yeah, I know, a Harley color, but it's only a Monster!)

I reckon it looks pretty cool, always liked CA Red.
