Many other have found out how my '96 944 with 41FCR eats 916s and 996s........ and I've been eaten by a highly tuned 750SS. I suppose it has an awful lot to do with who's at the controls....

that's a nice ride.. I fully rebuilt a 92 900SS and installed a 940 hc kit w/ 41 keihins, lightened flywheel, lightened pulleys, etc. I was planning on taking it to Mosport, but before I could brake it in, a cage hit me.. and I sold it discouraged.. I drove it later (as I sold it to my friend) and the thing flew! Spun up so fast (unlike 2v usually). Wish I kept it and fixed it up.. oh well. I have a couple other 900SS...so someday I can play again.. although first i must get the 851 together.

I have a 92' 851 and 93' Superlight with spoke wheels from a Sport Classic. Both track bikes. I agree that the SS holds the lines very well. It has 40ml Delortos and a 37 rear sprocket. I have to keep the revs up on corners to keep up with my 851 (my friend on it) before it starts to pull away. I find the Superlight more fun on the track being lighter and you have to work it harder to keep up with the others. I think you will be suprise with the 851 when you take it out on the track.

Yep. I have more stuff on it than I'm willing to admit or remember. But at the end of the day, the extra work at the track to make it keep up it's very rewarding.

On the downside... It ain't happy at all in lower gears on the road....

I know a "Crazy Canadian" that I've become friends with over many years of USDesmo rallies. Last time he insisted in me attending the DOCC Mosport (he's local). I may very well do it this year.....

I had to make a 5.5mm spacer for the disc rotors to clear the spokes and relocate the caliper with a new bracket. New bearings and spacers to fit the new axle.

Looks great, but why did you used the "heavy" watercooled 2V engine?

I chose the Paso engine because they handle the heat of a high comp, highly tuned engine better than the air cooled items. I have also grafted on injection and use a P8 variant to allow individual cylinder mapping. Possibly will look at closed loop injection in the future. I expect the bike in race trim to weigh in under 150kg, but I'm not sure at this stage.

i have a SS trackbike as well,wich weighs 157kg.
that is also with magnesium wheels,carbon tank,...

Yes, the weight will be a challenge. I have alloy front and rear subframes, carbon tank, mag wheels, lightweight fairings etc so who knows? we will see in due course. I need to get it up and running for the 2010 Bears racing season here in Oz. So quite a bit of work to be done yet...

About a week ago I fog my 93' 900SS sorted out, will try it on a short track this spring. I got one of Rick's 3-way adjustable shocks which works great. I put the Penske Superbike parts and valving in the showa forks and at Rick's suggestion got slightly smaller diameter springs, made aluminum perches to mount the springs on top of the cartridge and made Delrin spring guides that fit on the damper rod. This way the spring doesn't rub on the fork tubes, less friction. Works wonderfully!!
Engine just has high comp. pistons, lightened flywheel, 41 flatslides and Dynacoils. Makes for a great streetbike here in the tight twisties. I have a 944 engine almost finished up to put in it after I finish my 851.

p.s. The shock is length adjustable so the rear is raised about 10mm, put 888 clip-ons on it, turns in very nicely!

How much more performance do you think you can achieve by going to the 944 engine over your current 904 set up? or even a 984 engine. Low and midrange power will obviously get a boost, do you expect it to lower the lap times significantly.

I don't expect a lot more from the added CC's. I have the other engine from another project and plan on porting the heads which should give me a boost. This other engine is in better shape, MBP collets, etc. The bike has to come apart for painting the frame anyway so will do it then.
I also have a set of the DP "Torque" cams but have not decided if I will use them or not, may just sell them.

But in a track bike spinning the engine hard and often they are very savage on the valves, seats collets etc. Ive also seen evidence of valve to valve contact on a couple of occasions in different motors with these cams fitted to race engines.

I've heard similar things about these cams. I've read Brad's take on them on his site.
I am using the long manifolds and it being primarily a street bike for the tight twisties would have no problem short shifting at 7K. It's my understanding that they are really designed for stock heads, the high lift to compensate for the crappy intake passages in stock heads. I'm not sure that they are worth all the trouble if I do a good port job and use stock cams.
I originally planned on using it for a track bike but picked up a S4R 996 engine and have most of the parts to build up a track 851 so am leaning towards that for a track bike.

I have a really good description of porting them written by CR Axtel , posted on the old "Index" years ago. I'm going to give it a shot. I have seen plans to make a flow bench but don't want to get into it that deep. Honestly the bike the way it is has adequate power for the roads I ride on, just have this other engine that I've put a lot of work into, 748 trans., JE pistons, balanced, etc. etc. wanna use it!
Meanwhile still fabricating up my 50mm spag. header for the 851/testa.
