in defence of ducati...not only ducati is making mechanics out of riders its also certain "pro"-mechanics who insert "wild" parts which supposedly work as well but will make things alot more complicated when a problem pops up, especialy for beginners like me. for example on my bike a cheesy killswitch and this fuelpump relay and who knows what more...

so one relays is a "mp italy 2335" and one is a "iltalmec 218" both fused but they look far from identical what made me hasitate to swap them. but the hint from griff about both relays should be identical made me trust to swap them anyway and voilà! the fuelpump is buzzing even if i wiggle on the loom.

so it has to be the faulty alfa romeo relay (mp italy 2335) which caused the problem, i guess with only a blown fuse the fuelpump would never have primed again for that 1 sec yesterday.

now i will try to get me an oem ducati relay or an other italmec and hopefully will be back on the streets when the rain stops next wednesday

the good thing about this bike is, the moment you sit on the bike and its running like it should, you immediatly forget about every problem you ever had with her.

Did you confirm by looking at the pins and the numbers next to them that they are same.
You must be methodical, or you will throw money away. If the relay is buzzing on one side because the relay is bad it will buzz on the other. Buzzing is the relay switching itself on-off-on-off. If not it's back to connection issues.

no, the fuelpump was buzzing when i swaped the relays, not the relay itself, so im pretty sure the "mp italy 2335" relay is broken

This is an original relay. See the little numbers next to the pins. Power from ignition goes through pin 85 and out 86 causing the relay to energise and close. Power will then go through 30 and out both 87's.
you can test it on the bench with a 12v battery and a light bulb.

Here is a standard unfused 5 pin relay. Note the position of the pins 30 and 86. So by changing the positions of the spade connectors in the block you could make this work. The important bit is that the relay has 2 x 87, not 87 and 87a.

yes mine has same pins, it even has a little diagramm on it showing what you described. unfortunaly i dont have the option to test it but im pretty sure this relay is broken since its not "clicking" anymore or only when it feels for it.

i found a new oem ducati 00067464 relay for 15 bucks, i think this will be the fix

The relays can also come loose from vibration. The arse end of the bike vibrates a fair bit. I use thin tie wraps around the block and relay to stop them coming loose.

to be honest i never touched any of the electric parts in the "tail" before because i have no clue whats going on in there anyway and dont want to mess up anything. but this problem might be a good opportunity for me to get a bit into the electrics as well. sure it will not be the last time some electric problem appears on this 30 year old bike

Well now you know what a relay is and how it works and your head didn’t explode, your primed. The ecu is just tiny little relays and resistors that perform switching operations given input information. Just lots of little bits doing simple things in a little magic box.
The fuel pump not working as taught you that it’s controlled by something, and those somethings need to be tested before jumping to a conclusion. The whole bike is like that. Ask yourself why, test and explore. But remember KISS. Keep it simple stupid. Check the simple things first. It will save you time money and frustration.
And check your god damn chain. After 3-500 km chains need attention!
And change oil regularly

when i was searching about relays in the internet i found a guy in a alfa forum who describes how to repair a broken relay.

the new relay fixed it, i made already a little testdrive without any issue. today i will take her for a longer ride , hope she dont let me down...
