henk Anybody who can tell something about the difference between these two style yokes? One off them has the pinch bolt parallel with the yoke, seen this style most. On the other yoke sits the pinch bolt under an angle on the yoke, more like a street yoke. Is this difference year related or was it designed for street use? Henk!!!
dudlington The only thing I can think of is maybe the design of the top yoke changed when they changed from the early fixed tanks to the hinge up variety ??????. Access to bolts , speed of top yoke removal ???.
BABA The first version you show is easier to machine. You need long tools to machine the holes and the screw head countersink for the tightening on the steering axle.
henk Yeah i know the second one is harder to machine the pinch bolt. Would that have been the reason you think that they changed the design? Henk!!!
BABA I think it's just a choice of machining of their supplier. There is no reason that it has a impact between a road or a track use.
dudlington As a Engineer who works in things that can go wrong (DFMEA) , one thing that I could think of is : The design with the pinch bolt pointing downwards (Towards the airbox) brings the risk that when the bolt is loosened too much that it can fall into the airbox/lower carb inlet with dangerous results. Now with the fixing pointing out of the side , if the bolt is removed inadvertently and falls , it falls out of harms way. Also it is far easier to get to that bolt when it is pointing out the side with a normal tool as you have more space and access. If I was deciding the design I would go for the pinch bolt out the side. Normally suppliers do not make specifications , that responsibility comes from the design/race department.............however this was Ducati in the late 80,s and early 90,s so who knows what the mindset was ????. All I know is before the Amercians took over , the factory was a MESS. I could not believe my eyes when I visited there for the first time. Now under Audi it is squeaky clean and super organised............with very visible results on the streets and the track.
