SPS tank in Alu - Japanese marked ?

Did the 888 SPS come with tank in ALU in Japan ?

I saw this noted in an old sales add from Bonhams # 43 , suggesting it had an alu tank as sold in Japan. (Also referring to CF being the std )

First time for me also..............however I have seen Aluminium tanks being sold in Japan for all sorts of classic bikes. Maybe there are companies there that get the Chinese or Indian companies to make them stuff. Personally I would like to have one if available.

There is a Japanese company that makes bespoke fuel tanks, but they cost an awful lot of money.

At the time, Japanese road rules did not permit Carbon Fibre fuel tanks. I believe 3 x SPS were modified with Alum Tanks (by the Japanese importer) and then sold into Japanese market. I recall one of the Jap SPS was sold a few years back, it came with a brand new/un used Carbon Tank...nice! and a heap of other corse parts.

USA had the same rules, but no SPS where ever sent there due to other performance issues. Hence the SPO version was sent there instead with steel tank.

I've got 2 hand made alloy tanks on a couple of my Ducati's and they were made by Terry Baker later to become known as TAB in Wales.
I'd put their quality up as least as good as the mega priced Japanese kit (if not even better!) and they aren't that expensive.

The Imola alloy tank on my '79 900SS has been on there for getting on for 40 years now, it's only needed one repair in all those years (covering well over 100,000 miles) and that was because the replacement alloy silent blocks supplied by a specialist were too stiff!
I can't say any fairer than that.😁

based on the photos of these Jap SPS, you cant tell the difference. Fuel connection on outside of frame and the tank shape appears the same as the genuine carbon
