A cylinder has a particular length and diameter of header which is called a tuned length, at which exhaust gas is cleared to maximum effect for that application It's a technicality complex business as sound waves are involved, and there is a lot of information on the net about it. Get it wrong and you can loose power or end up flat bits in powe curves. For v twins trying to get equal lengths to end at mufflers evenly requires twisty turny stuff to happen. On early twins one muffler sits further back than the other. A simpler solution, but looks a bit odd.
What is interesting is the Brad Blacks venture into headers and mufflers on his 851. Well worth a read.
