i'm getting the 851 back on the road, and need tyres. head says road 5, heart says power rs. it has the sp michelin stickers on the swingarm so it has to be one or the other or look like a goose.
i imagine the road 5 would do everything better than the pilot sport i fitted in 2001.

Unless you plan on a few trackdays I’d go the sports/touring Road 5. Not saying you’re old or nuffink but I think you’ll be past knee on the deck craziness on your Saturday arvo ride through the Dandenong’s?
Sports/touring tyre will work better at lower temps (ie non-track riding) and won’t be so ready to square off.
I’ve an “old” ‘06 R1 I use for recreational road duties (hey, something in the shed has to be reliable) stuck some Pirelli Diablo Rosso Corsa ll’s on (Pirelli equivalent to Road 5’s?) and don’t regret it for a second.
Edit: go for a 55 profile on the rear and you’ll be happy as a pig in poo, 50’s suck balls.

Several of my friends are putting Road 5's on the rear on their sport bikes, a stickier tire on the front. Road 3 and 4 tires were cupping about at their half life, Road 5 seems to be better. I road Stevo's Sport Classic with a Road 5 on the rear in the twisties and experienced no problems at all. Wear is much better than softer tires . Not that I am all that fast but I didn't want to go any faster! I tried my DR650 on the track once with Pirelli Scorpion AT's and kept loosing the rear but it was no problem as long as I stayed on the gas and didn't chop the throttle. I was pushing it pretty hard!

about the fastest i ever rode was on a z3/z4 combo. which shows how long ago that was.
i think i'll go the road 5 both ends. i'm never going to ride it that fast. don't know how any more.
lucky it's a 180 rear. the current sports tyres aren't available in 170 i've found.

I'm just finishing off my spgriffy service, and took it for a squirt. The tires have time ex'd. An interest point in an otherwise pleasing jaunt. I have the spa tacho red light set at 9500, man it likes staying on!
I have a little fat happy tire man on my guard and run Pirelli. Have done since Hi Sports went the way of the Dodo. I tried pilots yonks ago, but they just didn't feel right.
I reckon there's a high probability it doesn't matter, as they'll go off before they wear out anyway. So spend a couple of bucks on a roll of electrical tape for your sticker to cure your paranoia 😁 , and go with your heart. It is supposed to be a love affair isn't it, might as well enjoy it.

i ordered some today. actually forgotten what i ordered now. i'll see what turns up.
griff851
Mate, you sound like your ready for a 450 mark 3. 😁

Road 5 or Power RS?
I've no problem with a Michelin sticker on the bike and running Rosso111s on my 888 and S4, my 999 came with Michelins and they frightened the life out of me on these greasy Spanish roads. Pirelli tyres give me a warning before trying to throw me off.

I use Continental SportAttack2 on my bikes and I love them. I've tested them on my 851/996 hybrid and they're great!
And I have the MICHELIN sticker on my swingarm but, to be honest, Michelins lag behind the other brands...

That's the first positive review I have ever heard of Conti's ! But then perhaps they weren't the Attack2's, just the Attack. Presently I am really happy with Dunlop Q3's. In the past I have used Michelin Pilot Power (probably about 10 sets). They were good in their day but didn't give much warning when the let loose. (hope this doesn't turn into a tire war !)
Mr.R
A tyre war Marvin?
I think the 851/888 crowd have a long way to go before we turn into the type of Bevel owner, who can carry out hostilities over which oil to use in their bikes.
However on that note...I favour Rock Oil TRM in my Bevel's. 😁

Rock oil, useless crap. I insist on using.... no hang on, we're in flux at the moment on bevel oil. Damn, caught out of position. Nice one Steve. But it is looking a lot being Penrite 15w50 ten tenths. 1600 ppm zinc, full synthetic and wet clutch friendly for $15 a litre. Come on how good is that. I also read there has been a splinter group having success with oil for diesels. Ah the worlds just gone mad. 😁

I've got Dunlop Q2's or 3's ( can't remember which! ) on my 900 SS and I swap the wheels onto the SP3 the few times I use it. I bought them after having Q2's on my CBR1000RR which I used to track fairly regularly, and they were great. Never had a problem on road or track on either bike.

I know these threads always turn into "Well I run these on my bike...", but someone mentioned Continental so...
My 851 came with brand new ContiMotion's, which after a lot of use I deemed are very good for the money. The only limitation I had with them was on track where the profile didn't allow for bigger lean angles, instead giving a little slide on the shoulder... fun when you catch it and ride on but also scary on your road bike and not something you try to repeat. They do wear relatively quickly too.
I was tempted to try the Road 5's but I'm back on Metzler M7RR's, my favourites. They're the twice the price of the Conti's but last longer, have more grip and a sportier profile.
brad black
out here contis are expensive across the range pretty much, and the metzeler sports tyres are pretty cheap. mostly because you can't give them away. very brand orientated.
Mr.R
I'm 99% sure that Conti's and Metzeler's are made by the same people and have been for some years now.

I always stock up on Dunlop Q2"s and now Q3+ this time of year when Dunlop has a $50.00 rebate on a pair. The Q3's are much better than the Q2's as far as confidence in lean angle. They both give fair warning before they go South.

pirelli bought metzeler in 1986. continental is a different company.
Mr.R
Ah thanks for that Brad.
