Having had a clear up trying to make room in the garage, which I share with my son, [he keeps his bikes in my garage], he said to me " you must have enough spares to build a bike". So taking stock I have a '95 monster frame, ohlins fg 9050 forks, a virtually new Maxton rear shock for an 851, yokes, clipons, foot rests, wheels, 851 swingarm, looms, ecu and power modules, and an 851 engine that turns out to be hopped up to 888 with SP3 cams done by previous owner. My son suggested a "Café racer" which appeals to me. He also said to lose some weight by using a loom. ecu and dash from a 1098 which makes sense. Has anyone used something similar or has any advice on using 1098 electrics?

You will have to install a newer style TPS to use the 1098 electronics on the 851 engine (unless you use a newer set of TB's) You can use the 1098 ECU and play with it by getting this- tuneECU.com -for an Android phone.
p.s. you would have to address the difference between the single engine sensor of the newer bikes like the 1098 and the old sensors on the 851 engine somehow

The 999 TB's would be shower injectors, 54mm I believe). TB spacing is different from the desmoquattro so you would have to modify the mount and juggle intake manifolds somehow. You will still have to figure out the timins sensor "thing".
There are 50mm traditional TB's available with the newer style TPS. I went a different route on my 851 with the Testastretta engine. I used the 50MM TB's from a S4RS, made an adapter to use the old style TPS, a ST4 wiring harness and 1.6 ECU. I don't know how much weight you would save using the 5.9 ECU?? (I have all of the chip burning "stuff" for the 1.6 ECU) I don't believe the tuneECU was available then (or I didn't know about it). I usually have to do things on the cheap so did not buy one of the expensive ECU's

Personally I wouldn't use the 999 TB's. Too many hurdles to jump. Yes, it can be done but the question is,,,,"is it worth it"? First you would have to get creative with the intake manifolds. The manifolds from a Testa will not fit a desmoquattro (I assume you want to use your 851/888 engine). second, they aren't all that great anyway. Being showers the injector is above the throttle plate. At low throttle/velocities the fuel just dribbles over the edge of the throttle plate (as Brad says!). They never come into their own until the throttle plates are opened up and the intake velocity is up. Third, you will have to, once again, get creative with the airbox. There are lots of traditional TB's which use the later style TPS, like the S4R, etc. if you want to use the 5.9 ECU

Here are the 999 TB in my 888 SP4. Homemade airbox , 999 CANBUS wiring , 999 ECU...................don,t go there. Unless you want to pay big money to source and rewire another dash (As I did) you will be stuck with the ugly 999 dash that does not fit with this type of bike.

I am liking the idea of the simplicity of the 1098 dash and wiring that uses the later ECU. It is a bitsa project, so nothing needs to be too period.
I will look for a set of later type tb's for the tps.
I have seen 1098 engines fitted to 996 etc using the old style big ecu's. How do they get the tps to work on this set-up? Maybe this can be done in reverse, so to speak.
Has the old style tb's ever been converted to fit the later tps? New butterfly spindle maybe?
I know that the 999 crank position sensor can run on a 1098 loom/ecu. This looks an option to use in the 888 sensor hole. Just need to see the difference in pick-ups on the timing gears etc.

I have made adapters to mount the old style TPS on the new TB's but not the other way around. I imagine itcould be done but wonder if it would be any less expensive than just sourcing a set of newer TB's. ?? I have a Testastretta engine that I plan on putting in my 2000 748 and will make another adapter and use the old style TPS and a 1.6 because I have all of the "stuff"
FWIW, I have a spare 5.9 ECU if you need one.

A little progress.
I have a 1098 loom, dash, ecu and S4RS t/bodies.
I know the 888 engine has a 2 wire timing pick-up sensor. Would fitting a 3 wire 1098 sensor (with mods to fit) be ok to do, or will the timing be out compared to a 1098 timing gear?

I'm using a 996/998 rotor which has an I/D of 109mm, and I need to get a 3 wire generator. Does anyone what the gap should be or how critical the gap is inside the rotor? I can find 2 generators listed, one with an O/D of 103mm and the other is 107mm O/D.

A quick google says the gap should be 1-15mm, although individual manufacturers may have their own specific gap. The bigger you go the less power.

For the timing sensor & timing gear you can use parts from 748-999 that have one sensor in the generator cover.

the denso one is larger, and was fitted to most stuff. there is also a kokusan one that was fitted to monster 400 and some other stuff. i ran into it buying s/h alt stator to go into an m400 one day and found the denso one i bought didn't go in. some research showed the problem - i didn't know about the kokusan one before that.
the 749/999 and later testa evo one is larger again.
