Oil cooler mount

Can anyone tell me where the bottom front oil cooler mount connects to? I'm fitting a cooler to a strada 888. Maybe it's not used or connects to V peice etc? Not started this yet but just wondered if I require a mount etc before I do go to fit it.

the oil cooler only mounts at the top, to the lugs on the exhaust cover.

You'll need a exhaust rocker cover with the lugs on, any from a 748, 888, 916, 996 will do and are not very expensive new. Newer style come with mounts for the Vee piece but you can ignore them and just use the cooler mounts. Call Moto Rapido again.

That's true but...
The 748/851/888 and 916's all used the same size (the larger one), the smaller ones were from the 916SP/955 Corse and the 748R.

I only know because I bought one a few years ago on ebay and it was too small.

I only know/found out because I fitted modified 916SP heads to my 851/916cc motor and then had to buy a smaller cover, that came labelled as a 748R part.
My 955cc motor has genuine 888 "G" Corse heads and they use the larger/deeper covers.

I run 35/30 valves in my 916SP heads, but I've fitted 37/32's in my "G" heads for my 955 motor.

I know that you don't like the testastretta engine but the standard S4RS Testastretta comes with the S cams, 100mm bore x 63.5 mm stroke, 40mm intakes, 33 exhaust. The included valve angle is 25 degrees wheras the desmoquattro heads are 40 degrees. Makes one not want to mess with a desmoquattro.

Hi Marvin,
I don't dislike the testastretta motors, rather I just think of them as "Out of Period".
If I'm building a fast 851/888 then I'll build a fast Desmoquatro because it's of it's period.
I would have nothing against tuning or building a "Stretta" motor if it was going into a later model bike.

For me it's a bit like bolting a modern motor into a Norton Featherbed frame, it just isn't right to me.
A Featherbed framed special should have a motor of it's time IMO.
Of course we all see things differently, who's to say some ones correct or not?
It just comes down to personal taste.
I see on this forum several members bolting in 999, 1098's etc of course they'll be very fast bikes (and I'm often impressed with the engineering), but for me it's almost like cheating.

I get it, and respect it !! I guess I got over it in the 60's when my father was thinking about building up the flathead in his '40 ford coupe. He talked with lots of people about building up the old flathead which would have cost lots of money. He finally decided it was more cost effective to just bolt in a small block Chevy.

Strange you should use the analogy about as we call them here "Big Yanks".
Only this week a workmate of mine has just set about importing a 60's Oldsmobile (I think it's a Cutless?), he's excited about the fact that it's got a tuned genuine Oldsmobile motor in it and not a small block Chevy that most people would have slotted into it.
I suppose that makes him a purist in the world of 60's American Muscle Cars?
...and if that's the case it probably makes me a 851/888 purist. 😎

Back in the early 80's I was working in a Bike shop building the race Ducati motors, the 2 chaps who were working in the shop were BIG fans of "Boss Yanks" as they called them. They both dreamed of owning either a Dodge Charger or Plymouth Roadrunner.
For them it was all about the rumble of the big V8 motors along with the muscle.

Olds motors

The big Olds motor would have been the 455. A good engine, just costs a small fortune to build. The small engine was the all aluminum V8, 215 cu in. My Brother used to build them up using Pinto pistons, making his own rods out of 4140 heat treated, "jimmy blowers". Here is an old pic of one of his mini rod pulling tractors using two of them, The one in front ihas a 471 Jimmy on it, the rear a 671 (notice the size of the drive pulley on the crank) If it didn't go fast enough he just made a larger drive pulley and spun the blower up a little faster. 1550 lbs wet.

One other quick question. What's the size of the oil feed Bango on the heads on the 888. Just hoping that the new line that came with cooler will fit. Cooler I've bought is the early 1999 st4. It has the early type hose not the later like st4s. Will this be a straight fit?
