888 Wheel/Tire Question

My 888 has a 5.5" rear wheel and a 180/55Z 17 tire. If I put a 6" wheel on it what size tire should I use? Do I have to worry about any clearance problems?

190 is recommended with a 6". A 5.5/180 is probably optimum for handling--I don't see the motivation to go to 6" unless it's just a nicer, lighter wheel.

Yes, I am considering a lighter wheel set and the rear happens to be a 6".

A 180 will makes the bike steer better.
I think my 916 had a 190 stock,so could be a 6"wheel i should check that.
And i always use 180 on it whitout any probleme

If it's a 6", go with the 190. 5.75 you could do either.

If you go wider, don't forget to check the chain clearance from the edge of the tyre as some brands are pretty close with a 180.

Also, check the clearance to the hugger, with allowance for tyre "growth" with speed and temperature.

The 916 has completely different rear suspension so clearances are different too. I wouldn't get a 190 on my early M900 which has the 888 ally swing arm and 5.5" Brembo three spoke wheels as standard.

These days they make some very nice profiles in the 190/200 range, and they steer pretty much as sweet as a 180. A lot of 600 racers lever 190/200's onto their 5.5" rims, the shape is a little wonky, but they do make use of the larger contact patch.

I have an old 200/60 Pirelli Superbike slick on the 6" rear of my 851/926 racer project. There is approx 5-6mm clearance to the chain. The only issue appears to be the lip of the hugger with the axle pushed all the way back. It's not touching just pushing it around the shed but I suspect it would with tyre growth at speed, and no way can I get a tyre warmer between tyre and hugger.

That is a nice job trimming that hugger. Does the rear wheel use a OE Ducati bolt pattern sprocket?
