888 sp4, Buy or not to buy...?

SP4 is the bike that I`ve kept in my mind since 2000 when I bought my first SS.
NOW or NEVER!!!

the sp4 is a spectacular motorbike, with a spectacular engine, in my opinion the ultimate ducati with a soul ... if you can buy it without thinking twice, but be careful it's totally original, it's too important ...

I personally think/feel that the SP4 and SP(4)S are the best looking of all the road going 851/888's.
...and the Ohlin's front end (on the SPS) marks them out above the later SP5's again IMO.
Leaking fork seal problems can be sorted out, my own 851 runs Ohlins FG9050's sorted by Maxton, they haven't leaked in the last 4 years and many thousands of miles so far...
Fingers crossed here.😏

Lets be honest here chaps, any 851/888 is a hoot to ride fast, they're all a lot of fun.
You pay your money and make your choice, as to which model you choose.

Yes those numbers are correct for an 888 SP4.

From my records it should have a plaque on the top yoke of something like high 400,s or lowish 500,s

Please let me know as I am building up a comprehensive record (That I will keep locked up)

A number DOT of a tire (year of production) "248": can anyone decode it? In my opinion is 48th week of 1992. Am I right?

I think it is week 24 of 1998 or 1988, 1988 is probably a little too old.😄
Some manufacturers added a symbol to distinguish 1998 from 1988.

It has a number: 492

The SP4 had a single fan bolted to the radiator, the SP(4)S had no fan at all, being fitted with a larger Corse rad'.

It should be around 92-95°C from memory.

I have found SP4 in Italy. Only one owner, only 12000 km, no race track, no accident. Since 2002 it has not been used. Last month the owner did a general service control with changing oil, filters, spark plugs,belts, brake liquids, front Ohlins service, cleaning fuel tank, new fuel pomp etc... There is an invoice with 1800 € on it. Service done by one of the best in Rome. There are a few little scratches on painted surfaces, a little damage on a side fairing, nothing serious. I will have to change tires and brake pads and do a service of rear ohlins. Non-negotiable price is 14000€. What do you think?

Sounds good, Doubt you will get a sp4 cheaper, Ide be buying that even if it required a little work, There few and far between and going up in value by the day.
