Anyone ever wrap their exhaust headers? I've just had a new paint job and a bit of repair work to the lower fairing and don't want to burn/melt the fairing/paint as the fairing sits very close to the pipes, there's already heatproof foil on the inner fairing,
Cheers!

I used black, 1"x50' fibreglass header wrap from my local auto parts store. Keeps the heat in the pipes and off my fairings. Cheap and looks good if you take your time wrapping and safety wiring it.

Hi, I use them on clitical sections like places near fairings or near the legs and seat. Normaly dont wrap all the pipes in orther to help dissipate the heat from the pipes and cilinders. Dont know if this is critical ir not.

I read an article on the benefits of ceramic coating vs the traditional wrapping of exhausts.
It mentioned that by wrapping you trap heat which is great for maintaining exh temperature and thus exhaust clearance and of coarse more power is obtained. Ie hot gas is thinner so easier to push.
However it went on to say that by trapping the heat to above design parameters your are effectively heat treating the metal to a different state. Then went on to say ceramic coating don't behave the same way yada yada yada.
Heat shields around jet engines is made from dual layers of titanium sheet with dimpling to make an air cavity and increase surface area. To increase efficiency an air gap between the structure and the shield, disperses even more heat.
I used 0.6mm aluminium sheet to make a shield on a mates early multistrata rear brake master cylinder. Seems to have stopped the header cooking the master cylinders.
How you achieve this on an exhaust would have to involve either welded tangs or hose clamps I'd guess
Other than all the above there's heat shield tape like you have already. There are some good after market types available.
That's about all I can think of short of cutting the fairing further away.

^^^^ Agreed. If I remember correctly, the basic theory is that hotter exhaust gasses flow faster than cooler exhaust gasses. Fibreglass wrap or ceramic coatings keep the heat in the header so the gas doesn't lose as much speed as it would without it. I've been using the wrap for years and I've never had a problem with exhaust tubes cracking or distorting.
Not melting my fairings and keeping my feet and legs cooler are the practical reasons I use it too.
