Clutch - steel plates vs basket, purpose of CUT on outer diameter ?

A quick check on the clutch before preparing the SP5 special for the season.

The basket is ALU (to be replaced as quite worn), Friction plates Sinter metal (996 RS style) ..

1, Steel plates seem to engage with the basket.. whats goes on here ? (i recon basket has to small inner dia ?)

2, What is the purpose of the little cut on the steel plates... ?

Plate tangs usually sit just above the OD of the basket. Some models have different size clutches, but I think it's around the 1098 time. I'd be checking it all out when I went to get the new basket.

Always wondered about those scallops out of the steels. I just arrange them in a clockwise pattern as l'm loading them. I figure it makes sense from a balance point of view. Could be wrong but.

The notches on the steel plates are to help them fling/push outwards whilst spinning around.
I agree with Griff's post, it's best/usual to space them out evenly around the hours of the clock.
This was how my race Yamaha's had them placed, as it was shown in the TZ owners manual.
As for the clutch basket??? It just looks totally F'cked to me...

Why would that do any good, my logic suggest that the more centered and balanced, the better ?

Yes the basket is Toasted, ill do some measurements, seems like the metal discs are to big, or the center hole is , and since off balanced by the little cuts, i just learned... ...Volia : contact...

After a closer look tonight..

Basket (ALU after market) meassure 140.5 inside, and with metal discs at 140.0, we are talking 0.5 mm clearance. With more play between inner diameter and drum : contact !

Old steel basket at hand (from a strada) has 142 mm inside ..

Attention when sourcing baskets..!!

steel backed friction plates in aluminium basket will fuck the basket pretty quick. also, the peened out bits of basket coming into the centre will probably hit the steel plates. i think i have had to scrape the edges off to get plates in before, and i have had some i couldn't get the plates out of due to similar thing. i may have undone the centre nut and slide hammered the hub with pack attached to get it out.

i alternate the cut outs top and bottom.

1098 pack has 1 extra friction plate and mostly or all 1.5mm steels, not 2mm, and the basket is a bit longer.
