Toasted cans... New damping material, best material and source ?

After a great Sunday ride, i noticed some heat spots on the CF cans coming back and knew what i was up for : a small repacking project ...

Material and source recomendation would be appreciated... i see lots of it on eBay, but not sure of whats best option to go for ? Glass, Stone, ?

The best packing I have found is "Silent Sport premium" Made in Germany. I don't remember where I got it, probably in the US so you have a better chance over there anyway. Google it!

P.S. Why? Trying to shove a "blanket" into a can is not too far different than trying to stretch a fly's ass over a rain barrel! IMHO

there was some stuff that expanded when it first got hot, so it was a roll that slid in easily.

I was just repacking some other cans and noticed the OEM/previous owner had put silver foil all around the damping material. Maybe it makes it easier to fit or has some heat/sound properties. Seemed like a good idea. Anybody know of any drawback apart from the next time as the foil does tend to fall apart if you try and remove (Quite simple though but messy).

It's to keep direct heat away from the carbon and stop it getting burnt.

Repacking silencers...

I've read on another Ducati forum that Acousta Fil is good. The web site is here http://www.textiletechnologies.co.uk...r-packing.html and there's even an online calculator to work out how much you need.

I went into a local shop that manufactures flame cupboards and got a load of their insulation off cuts for next to nothing.
The density of how you pack it will change the exh note. I went for as much as I could roll up around the centre tube. Not exactly a fun job.

Don't buy anything from those guys. I just received a pair of carbon replacement tubes for Termi mufflers. They look awesome, but are so thin they are worthless.

Basalt (rock wool) will attenuate the best, but fiberglass might last longer and be easier to work with. Pack in as much as you can manually. Too little and it will move/blow out of place. You can't put in too much by hand. Foil might add some heat properties and make it easier to reassemble but it's much too thin to do anything acoustic.

If you can find any "stitched" mat it will last longer than the typical chopped fiber stuff. Endless fiber strands (roving) are the best but I have no idea where you can find it. In raw form it takes special machines to install as it has to be blown in, which fluffs it up enough to be useful. Have you seen pics of cars with what looks like a rope coming out of the tailpipe? That's fiberglass roving that's been installed incorrectly.

The last time I repacked a muffler I used a mat that I wrapped as dense as I could then wrapped masking tape around it to hold it's shape when I stuffed it back together. The stuff I used was designed to expand when it got hot which made things easier, but again I have no idea where to buy it. (I got it from work, I used to design oem automotive mufflers)
