rxs51 wroteNot sure if this is the right place for this question but I am trying to get an idea what my old 851 may be worth if I need to go ahead and sell it. It is a 1989 Strada which I have owned for almost 20 years but it has a bit of a chequered history as it was crashed early on in its life (before I owned it so do not know the details) and is down on the insurance register as Cat D. It is in fair condition and is currently MOTd but has been ridden rather than being a polished ornament. Everything works and the bodywork was recently repainted to a good standard so it does look reasonably tidy but is certainly not concours standard. The speedo is metric (and always has been as far as I know) and it is currently showing 30,000 kms.
I appreciate that it eventually comes down to what someone thinks it is worth but advertised prices seem to vary widely and I would just like to get a rough ballpark figure to help me decide what to do.
I realize this thread has been resting for months. That and the fact that I reside in California, makes it a little more suspect, but here goes.
I have just registered my 1990 850 Sport and in California you have to have proof of financial responsibility in order to keep your registration. My insurance company (Progressive) has given me the option of an "Agreed Value Settlement" and has requested me to get an Appraisal from either an independent appraiser or a dealership appraiser. I will also mention that I added the 851 to my current policy online and gave a figure of about $8000 usd as a value for the motorcycle. The local Ducati Dealership does not do appraisals. The local vintage shop in my area wants $300 usd to do what sounds like a very thorough appraisal.
Hagerty Insurance offers a value calculator on there website. They specialize in "collector" vehicles. They give an average value of $20,000 usd (Low of $15,000 to "Concours" $30,000) for the 851. and do not require an appraisal submission. For about the same multi-bike premium as Progressive.
I had no idea the 851 value had increased so much in the past 5 or 6 years.
Interesting... I guess "fun" is no longer cheap.
Thanks for listening,
Mike
