Just talking with a chap selling his SP4 that has had a bottom end rebuild after a main bearing failure. The whole bottom end was then replaced with an late 92 851 set. He says that this will have "slightly different gear ratios and stronger main bearings" Also says that the bottom end was "intended for a special that never happened".
So are the mains stronger in the 851 and what difference should I expect in the gearbox? Over to the panel.

The sp4 gearbox it's similar to the 748/916 sp, with the firts gear more long and the other gears more reconciled.
The strada gearbox have the gears more spacious between them
For me it's better the sp version....😝

Thanks that make sense to have a taller first and close ratio for the rest.
Any ideas on the crankcases?

I've always believed that the SP4 also being a '92 model had exactly the same C/cases as the Strada of the same year.
These were the same C/cases that were/are fitted to the later 888's.
The SP(4)S however had the same bottom end as the '91 Corsa/customer race bikes and had the straight roller bearing main bearings.
The gear clusters fitted to the SP's are the same as fitted to the 748's and 996SPS models, the actual 1st gear ratio's (Number of teeth on the gears) are the same internally on the Close ratio box as the standard 'wide' ratio box fitted to the Strada's.
The taller 1st gear coming from the different gearbox and rear sprockets fitted between the SP's and the Strada's...
The SP's having 15/36 and the 851 Strada having 15/39, the later 888 Strada had 15/38.
