Hi
I took on a project this year bringing an SP5 back to life
She'd be raced and came to me in average condition - engine, frame and suspension all good, but in need of a re-paint, new bodywork and replacement of some non-original parts.
With the help of a great mechanic who did most of the work the project is almost finished and while she's not totally original I'm happy with the improvements - rims, rear shock, master cylinder all improve the bike. Fairing and seat are carbon fibre thanks to members on this site. My goal was to create a good useable ride, an SP5 that looked the part but took advantage of modern additions where it made sense.
But to complete the project there's a couple of things I need to solveĀ
.
Speedo is optimistic - reading 70km/r at 50, 135 km/hr at 100. The speedo drive is smaller than standard SP5 and I assume this has something to do with aftermarket rims and axle/spacer set up? We've tried a few things but a standard speedo drive won't fit, nor will the standard axle / spacers. Tried taking apart the drive internals and replacing these with different sized teeth but no good. Any thoughts?
The seat has been cut down (I assume for the racing). I can't find a replacement online, and Corbin and Sargent don't make them, but the original plastic underside is intact so I assume it's an upholsterers job?
I need to replace the Rearsets and understand the SP5 units are as rare as rocking horse poo - aside from having a set crafted by an engineer, any recommendations on good aftermarket units?
She rides well, engine is surprisingly strong and crisp.
Any thoughts?
Cheers
Steve
