lawman Good afternoon everyone, Not so much a technical question but there is a lot of caked on oil and gunk on the rear wheel of my 851. Of course the wheels being white it shows this up badly. What is the best stuff to safely remove it as I don't want to damage the wheel. Should I use a degreaser? Thanks Frank
brad black i like wd40 or kerosene. hydrocarbon to remove the gunk. then a gentle degreaser to remove the hydrocarbon.
got2Lev8 I find spray cleaner and polish to work well for pretty much my entire bike. I first used Honda Spray Cleaner but found Origninal Spray Cleaner which is exactly the same and can be found cheaper. I never take the garden hose to my bike. Robert
nine16 I have a routine. I try to start with bare wheels--no brake rotors or (hopefully) even tires. Give them an exhaustive cleaning--generally stating with WD40 to get the heavy grease and brake dust. If there are really difficult stains I'll use a sponge or microfiber towel with a serious cleaner like Purple Power, but I rub it quickly and then rinse it off as soon as possible. Then I wash the wheel with warm water and a little dish soap to get the remaining oils and chemicals completely off. Rinse again and then apply regular old paste wax (I use Turtle Wax), sometimes even a second coat. Why all that? Because now I can simply spray some WD40 on a microfiber and wipe the wheels down every couple weeks during the year and it's a snap to get them clean. Once or twice during the riding season I may hit the reachable surfaces with another coat of wax.
