Being a noob here I thought I would ask, of course the original superbike was the 851 but a few years later it was upgraded to the 888 motor but still called the 851. Is this correct? If this is so how can you tell if your 851 has an 888 motor and when was the change made?
Thanks

Basically:
The SP's are all 888, whether labelled 851 or 888.
The Stradas were 851 until 1992 when they became 888.

There were a few late 91 851's Stradas that came out with 888 single injector motors. 500 are recorded for Italian home market; there may be others. Best place to look is the engine number stamped on the lower part of the LH crank case. the engine number has the capacity as part of the stamping.
As Brad points out below the Italian 851 home market series had 888sp series engines, not sure of the full spec in terms of cams etc; they only had single injectors.

some possibly not 100% info:
first 888 ex factory was the sp2. 851 tri kit came with piston and cylinder kits in the spares kit, but it was 851cc ex factory.
euro frame number and also engine number will tell if it's a strada or sp.
851sp that left the factory as an 888 have a euro zdm888sxxxxxxx style frame number, except aust bikes which have the aust style number which kind of means nothing build wise.
zdm888w4xxxxxxx is an sp. zdm851w4bxxxxxx is a strada. zdm888w4bxxxxxx is a strada. 851 sp (1) must have a zdm851w4xxxxxx engine number.

All very interesting. The numbers have it.
