Front wheel's : light , lighter and lightest...surprice !

Just got what i thought was the lightest of the lightest... a Dymag front wheel CF/MAG combo 17X3.5... it turns out I was wrong. (its still a nice wheel but not the lightest option available. BTW : Any experiences with this wheel combo ?

The weight of the bare Dymag wheel comes in at 3.319 KG... not sure if the outer rings less weight makes up for the high'er total weight when the wheel is in action?

As reference, i checked some spare Marchesinis i have ... a 17x3.5 comes in at 3.166 KG... but 17x3.75 at 2.904 !! .. Hence the widest is lightest...and 0.4 KG less than the Dymag... hmmm

Some would rightly say... loose a few kg's and you are better off .. point taken !

Finally i tested first time what may be known to most of you : extensive use of strippers .. ;-)

How it works : Make the tire free of both sides of the rim... *tie up* the tire with strips full circle ... and you can pull of the tire with out any risk of damaging the rim... ref picture.. Volta ! (i believe it would work the other way around as well)

How is the 3.75" wide wheel lighter that the 3.5" one? You sure you haven't got your numbers mixed up?

Nope.. the black is 3.75.. however from a Aprillia 250 GP.. it will fit with very minor adjustments.. (for those chasing a 5 spoke mag wheel and come across a ditto) May be some special GP magnesium .. ;-)

i've got a front marchesini's from sebastian porto's 250 gp aprilia.
front is 3.75" and i use it with 120/80 dunlop kr slick.
it's very light 😄)))))
mine is a forged whell,and is 2860 g

Unsprung weight is way different to cutting back on the pies. The wheel with less weight has less inertia when forced up against the spring in the suspension and easier to for the spring to push the wheel back to the tarmac so suspenion is quicker and more responsive with better feedback. Also due to less mass the gyroscopic progression force is less so the wheel will change direction faster. Great for the track, but for general road riding it may reduce the stability level to the a bit flighty feel. ie if you hit a lump in the road that induces a tank slapper, a heavier wheel would reduce the severity of the event. Having done the 150kmph arms and legs all over the shop oh my god i'm going to die dance. I decided to stay with a heavier wheel until the steering dampener makes it off the shelf and onto the bike. The 97-98ss is the lightest of the Brembo 3 spoke wheels. ( axle needs to be changed to fit them). For bevels FPS are lighter than Ozcam.

Standard comment about Magnessium wheels. They are designed for track work and are generally lifed at a couple of years. Magnessium has a tendancy to store shock similar to toughened glass. The legendary Campanolli bevel wheels were a fine example. Lads buying ex race wheels, then suffering catostropic failure on the road at some point. The Magnessium content in later wheels was reduced to give them more life.
