rxs51 wroteThanks for the suggestions - sorry it has taken me a while to reply but the weather has been good recently so have been out clocking up as many miles as possible before the end of summer.
Can you explain what you mean by the timing being out from the factory - I have done the cambelts recently so am fairly sure that the valve timing is ok?
An injector service sounds like a really good idea but I have not been able to find anywhere local to do it. I made up a fitting to do some DIY cleaning of the injectors and the spray pattern looked OK but obviously that does not confirm that they are working properly at small throttle openings. I will try to find somewhere to send them for service over the winter or look for a spare set (the green ones) - anyone got any for sale?
I mentioned the difference in colour between the plug colours on the cylinders and found that the balance was out (thanks Brad) - it was not out by very much and I was surprised how much effect a minor adjustment of the linkage had on the mixture but this has not improved the low revs/low throttle response. Still love the bike on fast open roads but it is not so much fun in urban areas - will keep on trying to sort it!
Apologies for the stupid heading - I can not find a way to edit it.
Aside from the obvious checking that the dots all line up on the cam pulleys at Top Dead Center, you can use a degree wheel, zeroed at top dead center and using dial indicators, find out exactly when the intake valves are wide open. This can be adjusted via offset keys or adjustable cam pullies. I have heard the cam timing can be off from factory but probably not enough to cause a missfire, like you describe. But if you've had your belts fiddled with lately, check the dots! Could be off a tooth?
