griff851
Yesterday i thought i'd dust off the 851 and get ready for a bit of a ride some time soon. The battery got charged up, new fuel (i keep the CF tank empty when not in use). Last time out about 4 months ago, it was ok, but not as exciting as it should be. Never really the same after the Carnell race track weekend 2 years ago. I've been waiting for old mate Bevans dyno to be finished, so i could finally get an acurate idea of the fueling. Anyway the bike fired into life, so i warmed it up, then left it to idle for a bit. Out of character it died.
So started it again, gave it a rev, and let it idle. Once again it sat there idling happily, then died. Mmmm, plugs must be fouling, a good thrash will fix it. So suited up and launched.
Now i live on a a hill, with access via another hill. My driveway is 140m long with damn near 40° incline in a couple of spots, the preceding hill has a 30° S run over 100 meters, so pushing bikes up the hill is not an option. So off i trundle, down the driveway, up the hill, down the other side and open up the throttle on the straight.
Zip above 6k. Oh no, no, no.... Non resposive throttle. Still running, but sod all power. Some drive around 4k. Stink. Instantly.. "Mother f***ing fuel filter is clogged. Bastard thing is only 4000km old. I turned back, had 2 attemps at the first hill. Nasty back and turn around, watched by a little kid whom seemed in awe of the big red noisy thing. 😁
Driveway first incline was a piece of cake, second one, not so good. So nature deemed that to be the place of the fuel filter change. Different sort of ambiance, to the shed or the shop. Real back to nature feel. :-)
Job done, prime the ciruit a couple of times, burst into life once more. A quick scoot to the shed, then test ride.
Once more the brutal raw power of bygone days returned. The test run, which only 3 days ago i traversed on a mighty 450 Mk 3 D with cheap chinese shocks with custom fit no dampening at all, had a different time period thing going on. One, definatly Leather Flying helmet and goggles cira 1950 on a sunny casual afternoon jaunt. The other.... Re-entry after kicking alien butt in your space fighter!
Poor little thing was on song. Grunt raw awsome power from 8 to 11500, arse forced back to the bum pad, light front end every change, no tapering off all gears, Hoo ya, except 6th. At 230/240 kph running out of road is a bit of an issue...as well as turtles, water hens, ducks...owls..... birds in general... goats..alpakas....horses.....
So, fuel filters...no fuel pressure, no go. No good.
Lots of fuel pressure, good, very good.
