888 alternator - what the difference between older and newer bikes ?

Hi All,

I get the feeling that during the 888 model run the alternator changed. I see one on ebay (item 271897299557) says it's for 1992 888, and I had seen another one advertised that said it was for "early 888".

Does anyone know when it changed, and exactly what changed ? Any pics of both type would be appreciated.

afaik they're all the same, all wide rotor.

+1, AFIK they are all the same until the 3 phase alternator arrived. There were smaller "race" alternators however.

And the smaller race alternator is amazingly the same size as a late model bevel alternator rotor.

The smaller race rotor has the same dimensions as the Bevel rotor, but has stronger magnets in it. Same for the early ST2 rotors, which supposedly have rare earth magnets. Once the bevelheads discovered this, the prices for the race and ST2 rotors went through the roof.

The smaller 888 race rotor has the same diamentions as the 750 roundcase Bevel motor rotors.
They're not the same as the 860 onwards Bevels.
Mind you I've just fitted a modified 90's 600 rotor to my squarecase '79 900SS, it's saved me over 8 oz's in weight off the crank.
The 90's 600 rotors are the same as those fitted to the 851/888SP's. 😎
...and you can pick them up cheaply.

My question was not just about 888 Strada, if there's differences across the 888 range, I was curious to know more.

std one is wide, sp is narrow as steve points out.

ok, thanks for clarifying. What about 851, are they same, strada wide, SP narrow ?

the stator is the same for both, it's only the rotor width that changes.

not sure on the various 851sp, you'd need to look in a parts book.
